Job description

Role Summary

Caseworkers in this position deliver professional intervention services aimed at young offenders under youth justice supervision. The primary goal is to lower rates of re-offending through targeted support and monitoring.

Mandatory Qualifications and Requirements

  • Possession of a relevant tertiary degree such as social work, behavioural science, social science, criminology, or another accredited qualification appropriate for this role.
  • An unrestricted 'C' Class driver's license is essential as operating government vehicles is a routine responsibility.
  • This position is classified as Regulated Employment involving support of children and young people and therefore necessitates a valid Blue Card linked to the organisation prior to commencement.
  • Pre-employment screening includes checking for serious disciplinary history, validating qualifications, obtaining references, and confirming eligibility to work in Australia.
  • Availability for duty includes potential rostered attendance at Children's Courts on weekends and public holidays. Compensation for work outside normal hours will adhere to relevant Award provisions.

Travel Requirements

The job is principally based in Townsville; however, traveling within the region for site visits or to other departmental offices may be required, including occasional overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate effectively within statutory frameworks to simultaneously monitor young offenders’ adherence to court orders and provide interventions addressing factors contributing to re-offending risk.
  • Employ culturally sensitive, evidence-supported approaches such as restorative justice processes and collaborative assessments to reduce re-offending.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to promote positive outcomes for victims, young people, their families, and community stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver verbal and written reports to the Children's Court representing the Chief Executive; duties include conducting court interviews and drafting affidavits and presentence reports consistent with best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records and manage information to ensure accountability.
  • Engage proactively in professional development activities, including training sessions, supervision, and certifications to advance role effectiveness and organizational objectives.
  • Exhibit or cultivate cultural competence in alignment with the Human Rights Act 2019, supporting programs and partnerships that nurture cultural ties for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
