Job description
Role Overview
We are looking for a dependable and hands-on Caretaker to join a welcoming secondary school in Gateshead. This role offers a prime chance for an experienced caretaker or facilities professional to contribute significantly to preserving a safe, secure, and well-maintained school environment.
Key Functions
- Perform scheduled and emergency maintenance tasks and basic repairs throughout the school grounds.
- Conduct routine safety inspections, fire safety duties, and site checks.
- Manage opening and locking of school buildings to ensure security.
- Supervise security apparatus including locks, alarms, and CCTV; report any issues found.
- Address repair requests and escalate those needing specialist attention.
- Monitor the condition of plant, equipment, utilities, and the overall building state.
- Carry out porterage responsibilities such as relocating furniture, handling equipment, and managing deliveries.
- Assist with housekeeping, waste disposal, cleaning operations, and grounds upkeep.
- Respond suitably to emergencies and adverse weather conditions, including snow, ice, and minor flooding.
- Maintain vigilant adherence to safeguarding standards and health and safety protocols at all times.
Candidate Profile
- Experience in facilities management, premises maintenance, or caretaking duties.
- Proficient in building maintenance and first-line repair work.
- Sound understanding of health and safety procedures applicable to the environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize diverse tasks effectively.
- Confident in the use of small hand tools and completion of practical assignments.
- Adaptable with a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
- Physically capable of meeting the role's demands.
- Preferred qualifications include certifications in caretaking, facilities management, trades, first aid, or health and safety.
- Dedicated to safeguarding and fostering the welfare of children and young people.
Additional Information
Employment is full-time and on-site within Gateshead, England. Starting pay is from £12.71 per hour. The role is embedded within the school's facilities team, playing a vital part in keeping the environment safe, clean, and operational year-round.
