Overview

A leading global energy company seeks an experienced Biodiversity Manager to oversee biodiversity initiatives at the Zarafshan Wind Power Project in Uzbekistan. This role entails driving the implementation and optimization of biodiversity plans, managing surveys, and contributing to broader corporate biodiversity strategies. The position offers flexibility to be located either in Abu Dhabi, UAE or Zarafshan, Uzbekistan.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee execution of the Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and report on the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) targeting plant species designated as critical habitat.
  • Lead similar processes for bird offset plans where species fatalities have been identified.
  • Coordinate and supervise biodiversity surveys conducted by third-party experts.
  • Create Terms of Reference, manage the technical side of tendering, and supervise monitoring surveys focusing on bird populations in Important Bird Areas (IBA) and bat populations near the project site.
  • Interpret survey data and recommend revisions to biodiversity management strategies as necessary.
  • Provide expert ornithological guidance on setup and upkeep of the Identiflight Shutdown on Demand (SoD) system.
  • Assist with biodiversity management across the company’s wider asset portfolio.
  • Engage actively in company-wide biodiversity programs and initiatives.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or a closely related discipline.
  • A Master’s degree specializing in Biology, Ecology, or a focused area such as terrestrial ecology or ornithology.
  • Membership in a respected national or international professional body is advantageous.
  • Between 8 and 10 years’ professional experience working in biodiversity management within consultancy or project environments.
  • Minimum of 3 years dedicated to managing biodiversity risks associated with wind power projects impacting avian species.
  • Hands-on experience with biodiversity frameworks including BMPs, BAPs, ecological offsets, Shutdown on Demand (SoD), and Power Curve Feathering Mechanism (PCFM).
  • At least 3 years of applying biodiversity management aligning with standards set by the IFC, EBRD, and ADB.
  • Comprehensive understanding of managing biodiversity impacts resulting from renewable energy projects.
