Job description
Overview
The API Inspector is tasked with examining and evaluating pressure equipment, piping networks, storage tanks, and related assets to ensure they meet industry standards, API codes, and client requirements. This role plays a critical part in maintaining plant safety and operational reliability by detecting defects and recommending necessary corrective actions.
Key Duties
- Inspect pressure vessels, piping systems, storage tanks, and associated hardware in line with API guidelines (API 510, API 570, API 653).
- Analyze inspection documentation including engineering drawings, material certificates, and maintenance histories.
- Identify signs of degradation such as corrosion, erosion, cracks, or leaks during assessments.
- Observe and oversee various NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) procedures such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Penetrant Testing (PT), and Visual Testing (VT).
- Draft thorough inspection reports and suggest measures like repair, replacement, or further monitoring.
- Ensure inspections comply with organizational protocols, client specifications, and recognized codes and standards.
- Collaborate with maintenance, operational, engineering, and NDT teams during plant shutdowns and regular inspections.
- Supervise repair works and confirm completion aligned with approved guidelines.
- Maintain and update inspection records and databases as necessary.
- Engage in risk-based inspection assessments when applicable.
- Adhere to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards and encourage safe work practices consistently.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Valid API certification(s) such as API 510, API 570, and/or API 653.
- ASNT Level II certification in NDT techniques is beneficial.
- Familiarity with international standards including ASME, API, and ASTM.
Experience
- At least five years of practical experience in inspection roles within oil & gas, petrochemical, refinery, LNG, or industrial operations.
- Involvement with shutdown inspections, asset condition evaluations, and integrity management systems.
- Experience working with inspection software and report management tools is preferred.
Skills and Competencies
- Comprehensive understanding of inspection criteria for pressure equipment and piping.
- Competence in interpreting engineering drawings, PID diagrams, and isometric projections.
- Strong report writing and documentation aptitude.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail coupled with analytical problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to operate both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Certifications Preferred
- API 510 - Pressure Vessel Inspector
- API 570 - Piping Inspector
- API 653 - Storage Tank Inspector
- NDT Level II qualifications (UT, MT, PT, VT, RT)
- H2S and other relevant safety certifications
