Job description

About Engine by Starling

Engine by Starling is the SaaS technology business spun off from Starling Bank. It powers Starling's rapid growth digital banking platform and now offers its advanced technologies to banks and financial institutions globally. The team thrives in a fast-paced, innovative fintech environment, with a flat structure empowering engineers to make decisions and foster collaboration and learning.

Role Overview

We are seeking Android Engineers passionate about delivering high-quality features for our award-winning app and internal tools. This role involves building new products from the ground up, owning projects, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a scaling organization aiming to transform banking worldwide.

Engineering Culture and Practices

Our engineering teams embrace modern android tech stacks including Dagger, Realm, Retrofit, Coil, Compose, Coroutines and utilize Espresso and JUnit for UI/E2E and unit testing. We prioritize security, accessibility, clean and maintainable code, and collaboration with QA to ensure robust feature delivery.

Engineers work closely with mobile leads and partake in continuous learning and knowledge sharing. There is a strong focus on shipping production-ready code from early engagement.

Technical Environment

Our Android platform supports multiple international partner banks with SDKs and apps for diverse markets such as Romania (Salt Bank) and Australia (AMP Bank). This demands familiarity with both latest technologies and legacy libraries, plus experience or interest in library maintenance, open source contribution, and internationalization.

Benefits

  • 33 days paid holiday including public holidays and an extra day off for your birthday
  • Incremental leave increases with service length plus option to buy/sell up to 5 extra days
  • 16 hours paid volunteering leave annually
  • Enhanced pension scheme with salary sacrifice
  • Life insurance at four times salary and group income protection
  • Private medical insurance through VitalityHealth covering mental health and cancer support; discounts for partners at Waitrose, Mr & Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Employee referral program incentives
  • Perkbox membership providing retail discounts, wellness platforms, and weekly perks
  • Access to Cycle to Work, salary sacrificed gym memberships, and electric vehicle leasing schemes

Work Arrangement

We operate a hybrid working model preferring candidates located within commuting distance of our London office to foster collaboration and in-person interaction.

Interview Process

  • Initial conversation (~45 minutes)
  • Take-home technical test (no time limit)
  • Technical face-to-face interview (~1.5 hours)
  • Final interview (~45 minutes)
