About SALS
The School of Alternative Learning Setting (SALS) seeks to build a talent pool of Youth Transition Officers for both permanent and fixed-term, full-time and part-time roles anticipated between 2026 and the end of Term 4, 2027. SALS, established in 2019 and made a standalone school by 2022, focuses on supporting students exhibiting challenging behaviors through short-term, intensive programs aimed at promoting social skills and self-regulation. The program works closely with specialists including paediatricians, psychologists, and psychiatrists, operating across 13 sites throughout metropolitan and regional Western Australia.
Role Overview
The Youth Transition Officer plays a critical role in facilitating effective and responsive transitions for students from SALS back to mainstream education or alternative pathways. This role demands strong teamwork and communication capabilities, professionalism, and the capacity to engage with youth aged 10-18 at risk, providing individualized case coordination and access to support services. Experience in case brokerage and student referrals is highly valued, and duties may include transporting students. The role is based at SALS sites in Joondalup, West Perth, Wattle Grove, or Rockingham, with potential travel across metropolitan and regional areas, including attendance at professional learning sessions.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, or hold valid visas permitting work for the appointment term.
- Mandatory possession of a valid Working With Children Check prior to commencement.
- Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtaining a Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before starting.

- Excellent communication skills for building relationships, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
