About the Role

The Youth Justice Coordinator will oversee the management of Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in alignment with the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989. This role involves working closely with tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, and the community to address root causes of offending behaviours. Additionally, the coordinator will collaborate with victims, police, and the Youth Court to ensure accountability and protect the interests of victims and the public. Emphasising a mana-enhancing, restorative approach, the role utilises community knowledge and resources to foster an offending-free future for youth. Some travel within the region may be required.

Key Responsibilities and Requirements

• Manage and facilitate FGCs effectively, ensuring adherence to relevant standards, legislation, and timelines.
• Develop and maintain strong, trusting relationships with youth, families, community members, victims, and professionals involved in youth justice.
• Demonstrate experience working with youth aged 12 to 18 years.
• Possess a valid, clean New Zealand driver’s license (consideration for historic convictions on a case-by-case basis).
• Manage workload independently, communicate clearly, and produce quality reports.
• Exemplify commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and incorporate this in daily practice.
• Exhibit cultural competence, particularly regarding tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ cultures.
• Hold or be willing to pursue qualifications in adolescent psychology, criminology, youth development, or community development (desirable).
