Role Overview
We are seeking a knowledgeable and hands-on Winemaker to oversee all aspects of the winemaking process, from fermentation through blending to final product sign-off. This role requires technical expertise, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for producing wines with distinct character and high quality. The ideal candidate will be adept both in vineyard and winery environments, communicate effectively, and thrive in a culture focused on innovation and continuous enhancement.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct all winemaking operations including fermentation, additions, blending, laboratory analysis, and storage management.
- Ensure timely delivery of wines that meet brand style, legal standards, and customer expectations.
- Maintain comprehensive records within Vinarchy’s Wine Management Systems and ensure full regulatory compliance across all processes.
- Oversee blend formulation and adherence to style, SWINZ, legal, and labeling requirements; keep updated tasting notes and blend documentation.
- Prepare blend amendments, dispatch forms, and monthly reports accurately and punctually.
- Monitor fermentation and laboratory trials and ensure optimal wine storage conditions.
- Contribute to new product development and creation of innovative wine styles.
- Manage wine inventories collaboratively with senior winemaking leadership.
- Serve as the principal brand liaison, effectively communicating style, story, and technical details.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives including 5S standards, Tier meetings, and participate in audits such as WSMP, ISO, and BioGro.
Qualifications and Experience
- Tertiary degree in Winemaking or a Bachelor's degree in Science.
- At least 4 years of previous hands-on winemaking experience, preferably at a large-scale winery.
- Excellent communication abilities, both verbal and written.
- Strong proficiency with computer systems and winery management software.
- Well-developed palate and solid understanding of diverse wine styles and quality standards.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence and quality craftsmanship.
Work Conditions
The role involves occasional domestic travel and may require work beyond regular hours. During vintage season, expect a demanding schedule of up to 70 hours per week across six days.
