Job description
About the Company
SLR Consulting Canada is a team of over 1000 professionals working across 20 offices nationwide. We provide environmental, sustainability, and regulatory advisory services through integration of over 30 technical disciplines, helping clients solve complex environmental sustainability challenges.
Role Overview
As a Water Resource Engineer on our Hydrogeology and Hydrology team, you will collaborate with hydrogeologists, hydrologists, engineers, geochemists, ecologists, and other experts on mining-related projects, working in a cooperative setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Compile, process, and assess climate and hydrological datasets, including quality control, gap filling, data interpolation and extrapolation using statistical approaches.
- Conduct hydrologic frequency analyses to characterize droughts, extreme wet weather, and other relevant water management events.
- Assist in creating conceptual hydrological models defining catchment boundaries, processes, inputs, assumptions, boundary conditions, and calibration parameters prior to numerical modeling.
- Build, calibrate, and validate hydrological models to describe regional and local watershed behavior in gauged and ungauged areas.
- Develop and maintain water balance models for mine sites using GoldSim software, accounting for rainfall, evaporation, runoff, recharge, inflows, and operational factors.
- Adjust water balance models to consider site modifications, infrastructure updates, and water management practices under multiple rainfall and climate change scenarios, covering operational and post-closure phases.
- Create and calibrate contaminant load balance or water quality models in GoldSim to simulate contaminant transport and concentrations impacting receiving environments.
- Perform sensitivity and uncertainty analyses to evaluate critical model assumptions and parameters affecting model predictions and water management decisions.
- Interpret modeling outputs and prepare clear technical documents, figures, and reports that communicate methodologies, assumptions, limitations, and significant findings to internal teams and clients.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Water Resources Engineering, Hydrology or a related field.
- Master's degree (M.Sc.) in Hydrology with specialization in modeling through coursework or thesis preferred.
- Experience using GIS software for watershed delineation, spatial data handling, terrain analysis, and generating hydrological model inputs.
- Proficiency in R or Python for data processing, statistical analysis, visualization, and workflow automation related to hydrology.
- Practical experience implementing and calibrating conceptual rainfall-runoff models.
- Familiarity with hydraulic modeling tools such as HEC-RAS or Iber is advantageous.
- Competence in statistical and data analysis libraries for climate and hydrological dataset QA/QC and visualization.
- Experience with GoldSim for water balance, hydrological, or water quality modeling is a plus.
- Minimum of three years relevant professional experience.
- Strong oral and written communication abilities.
- Registration or eligibility for registration as a Geoscientist in Training (G.I.T.) or Engineer in Training (E.I.T.).
- Valid British Columbia driver's license.
- Capability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Work Environment and Benefits
- Comprehensive compensation package including vacation, retirement savings plans (RRSP), benefits, and wellness programs.
- Competitive salary ranging from $80,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and internal equity.
- Permanent full-time employment with flexible scheduling options.
- Growth and advancement opportunities within a supportive organization that values career development.
