Job description
About SLR Consulting
SLR Consulting Canada is a large, multidisciplinary team comprising over 1000 professionals specializing in advisory, environmental, engineering, and regulatory services across 20 offices nationwide. Our integrated approach facilitates addressing complex sustainability challenges for our clients, emphasizing impactful environmental and sustainable solutions.
Role Overview
Joining our Hydrogeology and Hydrology team, you will collaborate with an interdisciplinary group including hydrogeologists, hydrologists, engineers, geochemists, and environmental scientists. Your main focus will be on mining projects where you will apply your expertise in hydrological data and modeling.
Key Responsibilities
- Gather, process, and critically evaluate climate and hydrological datasets, performing data quality checks, gap analysis, interpolation, and statistical patching.
- Execute hydrological frequency analyses to characterize drought, flood, and other key water management events.
- Support conceptual hydrological model development by defining catchments, hydrological processes, assumptions, and calibration benchmarks before building numerical models.
- Create, calibrate, and validate hydrological models to simulate both regional and site-specific water responses in gauged and ungauged watersheds.
- Develop and maintain water balance models using GoldSim software, integrating factors such as rainfall, evaporation, runoff, groundwater recharge, and operational mine activities.
- Update water balance models to reflect changes in site infrastructure, water management strategies, and different event or sequence rainfall scenarios, including climate change impacts during operational and post-closure phases.
- Build and calibrate site-wide contaminant load and water quality models in GoldSim to predict contaminant transport and concentrations in receiving environments.
- Perform sensitivity and uncertainty analyses to assess model assumptions and parameter impacts on predictions and water management decisions.
- Interpret modeling outcomes and prepare comprehensive technical reports and visualizations outlining methodologies, assumptions, limitations, and key findings for project teams and clients.
Work Environment and Benefits
This position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to a collaborative and engaged team where your professional impact and expertise will be appreciated and recognized. SLR fosters a work culture focused on continuous professional development and long-term career satisfaction.
- Competitive total compensation package including vacation, RRSP, extensive benefits, and wellness initiatives.
- Salary range from $80,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on education, credentials, and experience.
- Full-time permanent employment with flexible scheduling options.
- Prospects for professional growth and career advancement within the company.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in water resources engineering, hydrology, or a related field.
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in hydrology preferred, ideally with modeling specialization from coursework or thesis experience.
- Proficiency with GIS tools for hydrological/water resource applications including watershed delineation and spatial data processing.
- Experience with R or Python programming for data management, statistical analysis, visualization, and workflow automation in hydrology.
- Practical experience developing and calibrating rainfall-runoff conceptual models.
- Familiarity with hydraulic modeling software such as HEC-RAS or Iber is advantageous.
- Utilization of statistical and data analysis packages to perform quality control and analysis of climate and hydrological data.
- Experience with the GoldSim modeling environment for water balance, hydrological, or water quality simulations is desirable.
- Minimum of 3 years relevant professional experience in the field.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities.
- Registered or eligible for registration as Geoscientist in Training (G.I.T.) or Engineer in Training (E.I.T.).
- Possession of a valid British Columbia driver’s license.
