About the Role

The Waste & Recycling Helper plays a crucial part in maintaining cleanliness and safety within communities. Collaborating closely with a driver, the helper is tasked with gathering solid waste and recyclable materials from residential and commercial collection routes. The role involves using truck compaction mechanisms and ensuring all tasks comply with safety protocols.

Key Duties

• Field Operations and Route Tasks: Collect solid waste, organic waste, and recyclables from designated customer locations; load these materials into appropriate truck compartments.
• Carefully operate the truck's hydraulic compaction equipment and related controls.
• Collaborate with drivers and route supervisors to follow set route guidelines and propose methods to improve route efficiency.
• Assist with sorting materials, cleaning collection carts, managing pallets and containers, and operating compactors within warehouse settings as necessary.
• Vehicle and Driver Assistance: Guide drivers during reversing and maneuvering in confined spaces to ensure safe navigation.
• Conduct pre-route inspections to confirm the truck is stocked with essential tools like brooms, shovels, and spill kits.
• Help maintain cleanliness and upkeep of the vehicle’s interior and exterior.
• Safety and Compliance: Adhere rigorously to personal and equipment safety checks and comply with all relevant regulations and company safety policies.
• Consistently wear mandated personal protective equipment including high-visibility vests, boots, glasses, and gloves.
• Identify and label prohibited waste; notify supervisors about these items and ensure they are removed from collection sources.
• Participate actively in company safety meetings and ongoing improvement initiatives.
• Customer Service and Professionalism: Present a professional and courteous attitude while engaging with clients and the public.
• Promptly communicate any customer issues, damaged equipment, or obstacles encountered during routes to the relevant personnel.
• Carry out additional operational tasks as directed by management.

Qualifications & Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is preferred but not mandatory.
• Some work experience of 1 to 3 months in related fields such as labor, route assistance, or waste management is advantageous but not essential.
• Holding a valid driver's license is beneficial but not a prerequisite.
• Must fulfill company standards for safety-sensitive roles including successful background and substance screening tests.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with team members and the public.
• Ability to comprehend and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
• Capacity to learn and safely operate truck mechanisms and assorted route tools.

Physical & Work Environment Demands

• Requires frequent physical activities such as standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and balancing during shifts.
• Must be capable of lifting and carrying items weighing up to 65 pounds regularly.
• Ability to push, pull, or move weights up to 100 pounds with team assistance.
• Good vision is required including depth perception, peripheral, close and distance vision, and color recognition abilities.
• Work involves exposure to outdoor environments for the entirety of shifts and various weather conditions including rain, heat, cold, and humidity.
• Regularly works in traffic areas and near moving machinery and vehicles.
