About MEC and the Role

MEC is embarking on an exciting expansion in Whistler, British Columbia, creating a new store that stands as a cornerstone for outdoor enthusiasts. Beyond being a retail outlet, MEC serves as a community hub that promotes sustainability and fosters a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can be themselves. Joining as a Visual Merchandiser means being part of a founding team that shapes culture, builds community ties, and lives MEC’s values in one of the world's premier mountain destinations.

This position is ideal for those passionate about the outdoors and eager to assist customers in gearing up confidently for various adventures — from their first camping trip to extensive backcountry excursions or weekend rides. Working here means collaborating with people who share a genuine love for nature and outdoor activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create compelling product displays and visual presentations following current merchandise and market trends.
  • Manage the installation of promotional displays and seasonal transitions throughout the store.
  • Conduct regular floor checks to maintain visual and merchandise standards.
  • Style mannequins and dress forms according to MEC's established standards and best practices.
  • Design and prepare table merchandising and themed vignettes.
  • Plan and coordinate effective merchandising of walls and floor fixtures.
  • Engage with customers to provide expert advice and match them with appropriate outdoor products.
  • Adjust lighting to enhance mannequins and merchandise presentation.
  • Train and communicate visual merchandising standards to floor staff members.
  • Coordinate with Department Managers to align promotional setups and departmental displays.

Candidate Profile

  • Possess 1-3 years of relevant experience in visual display and merchandising.
  • Enjoy working within an inclusive, diverse, collaborative, and hands-on team environment.
  • Demonstrate a passion for outdoor activities, with product knowledge in camping, cycling, packs, or related areas being a strong advantage.
  • Exhibit excellent skills in planning, organization, and time management.
  • Be enthusiastic about helping customers connect with quality outdoor gear that encourages an active lifestyle.
  • Show meticulous attention to detail and a flair for creative visual ideas.
  • Display a proactive attitude, eagerness to learn, and a positive, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Possess qualities such as personal integrity, customer focus, teamwork, initiative, and character.
  • Maintain a friendly, welcoming demeanor with a genuine desire to assist customers.
  • Approach customer service as a dedicated mindset aimed at delivering exceptional experiences.
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 pounds, walk approximately 10,000 steps daily, and comfortably use ladders.
  • Previous retail or customer service experience is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Show curiosity about outdoor gear, with opportunities provided for skill development and training.

Work Schedule and Availability

  • Committed to full and open availability five days per week, including one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday).

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive hourly pay ranging from $20.40 to $23.00, depending on skills, experience, and certifications.
  • Full-time hours totaling 37.5 paid hours weekly.
  • Access to staff discounts and exclusive vendor pro deals.
  • Opportunities for field experiences and team activities to live MEC’s mission of outdoor engagement.
  • Extensive training and product knowledge development.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical and dental coverage, life insurance, and an employer-matched group Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP).
  • Paid sick leave and volunteerism support.
  • Tuition reimbursement for personal growth and skill expansion.
  • Clear pathways for career advancement within the company.
  • A positive and collaborative team culture that values people as the foundation of the workplace.
