Job description
Position Overview
The Viral Vector Staff Scientist will be a key contributor within the Viral Vector Facility, driving the strategic aims of the Bio-Medical platform at KAUST. This role involves designing, producing, and delivering advanced viral vectors like AAVs and Lentivirus to back pioneering scientific research locally and regionally. The scientist will refine and upscale production methods, enhance vector efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and uphold rigid quality and biosafety standards. Close cooperation with researchers, mentoring technical personnel, and providing expert training in molecular genetics and viral vector technology are integral to advancing KAUST's position as a regional leader in viral vector development.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with researchers to determine suitable viral vector systems that meet important research objectives and enable impactful scientific outputs.
- Produce high-grade, secure viral vectors customized for diverse experimental designs and cell-based applications.
- Oversee and guide a laboratory technician; manage daily lab operations to ensure punctual, quality results.
- Organize and manage concurrent research projects, ensuring deadlines and objectives are achieved.
- Create, implement, and maintain comprehensive standard operating procedures to guarantee production efficiency, consistency, and compliance.
- Maintain a safe laboratory setting in line with Good Laboratory Practices and institutional biosafety and ethics requirements.
- Collaborate with IT and bioinformatics units to integrate laboratory data for improved management and analysis.
- Innovate and upgrade production techniques to solve research challenges, boost viral vector output and quality, while reducing expenses.
- Deliver advanced training programs to enhance internal technical knowledge and capabilities in viral vector methodologies.
- Perform general laboratory administration including procurement, record keeping, equipment upkeep, and participation in institutional committees and special projects.
Qualifications and Expertise
- Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.
- Between five to seven years or more of practical experience in molecular genetics, cloning, gene editing, viral vector manufacture, and cell culture.
- Proven scientific achievements showcased by successful research project leadership, operational excellence, and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals of high impact.
Required Skills and Attributes
- Comprehensive knowledge and expertise in cell and molecular genetics.
- Proficient in producing viral vectors including AAV, Lentivirus, Rabies Virus and utilizing gene manipulation tools.
- Experienced in immortalizing primary human cells.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with biological scientists to translate experimental requirements into genetic tools.
- Excellent organizational skills to handle multiple projects concurrently.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral, to engage stakeholders and foster teamwork.
- Proactive, results-oriented, and committed team player oriented towards shared goals.
