About the Role

The User Interface Designer will lead the design efforts for a volunteer management platform, overseeing comprehensive workflows that support diverse users such as coordinators, administrators, and volunteers. This role emphasizes creating intuitive, actionable, and accessible UI elements suited for responsive and data-intensive environments. The designer will develop consistent visual and interactive components and collaborate closely with product management, research teams, and engineering to guide designs from initial concept through to deployment. A key part of the role involves applying WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and contributing reusable design elements to the governmental design system as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Craft user interface screens and entire user journeys for the volunteer management system.
  • Convert product needs and research discoveries into practical, user-friendly interface designs.
  • Design solutions tailored for multiple user groups with varying contexts and requirements, including coordinators, administrators, and volunteers.
  • Create and uphold a consistent set of UI patterns, components, and interactive behaviors throughout the product.
  • Organize and conduct usability testing to confirm design effectiveness, analyze results, and refine designs accordingly.
  • Ensure all UI elements adhere to accessibility standards and foster inclusive design principles during daily design activities.
  • Collaborate with research, product, and engineering teams for seamless transition from design concepts to final product implementations, including detailed design handoff support.
  • Share reusable components and patterns with the governmental design system when applicable.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in UI or product design, demonstrated through a portfolio of delivered digital products.
  • Strong expertise in UI fundamentals including layout, typography, hierarchy, and interactive designs tailored for responsive and data-rich interfaces.
  • Proficiency in Figma, particularly with component creation and usage of design tokens.
  • Experience in all phases of usability testing—from planning and facilitation to analysis and iterative design based on feedback.
  • In-depth knowledge of accessibility and inclusive design practices, compliant with WCAG 2.1 guidelines and ARIA standards.
  • Beneficial: Prior work designing workflow or management systems such as dashboards, administrative tools, and scheduling platforms.
  • Beneficial: Experience collaborating with or contributing to design systems in environments involving multiple teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of articulating design decisions and trade-offs effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
