Position Overview

This role is for a Ubuntu Security Engineer based in Saudi Arabia, joining a globally distributed team focused on protecting users and enhancing the security of open source software, particularly within the Ubuntu ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate, identify, remediate, and validate vulnerabilities that impact open source packages within Ubuntu.
  • Track and monitor discovered vulnerabilities through their lifecycle using proprietary security tools and processes.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams, upstream developers, and community contributors to develop and confirm effective security patches.
  • Conduct code audits to uncover security flaws and vulnerabilities in software components.
  • Evaluate security risks to help prioritize remediation efforts based on potential impact and urgency.
  • Develop features, automation scripts, and internal tooling to bolster the security posture of products and infrastructure.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of security analyses, remediation actions, and related technical details.
  • Participate in broader open source security initiatives and engage with the security community and industry events.
  • Manage projects autonomously within an international team environment, ensuring steady progress and accountability.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of common software security vulnerabilities and attack vectors, along with methods for detection and mitigation.
  • Familiarity or experience with coordinated vulnerability disclosure and responsible security communication practices.
  • Comfortable with open source development workflows and tools.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
  • Experience with Linux operating systems, particularly Ubuntu or Debian-based distributions.
  • Excellent analytical, logical problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication abilities to clearly articulate technical security issues to engineers and community developers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills capable of working seamlessly across diverse cultures, countries, and distributed teams.
  • A proactive and inquisitive mindset with adaptability, accountability, and eagerness to learn about new security threats and technologies.
  • Self-driven with the capacity to prioritize tasks and meet goals independently.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or related field is preferred, with openness to candidates with strong alternative backgrounds.
