Transportation Maintenance Technician

Job Responsibilities

• Perform scheduled servicing and maintenance on all vehicles to ensure efficient operation, including greasing, oil changes, and filter replacements.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical breakdowns and conduct regular inspections of exhaust, fuel, cooling systems, carrier bearings, U-joints, and other critical components.
• Check tires, batteries, and other vehicle elements before vehicles return to service after extended periods such as vacations.
• Maintain inventory reports for oil, filters, essential spare parts, and communicate updates to the Transportation Director.
• Carry out routine cleaning of district-owned vehicles to uphold cleanliness standards.
• Inspect and repair bus brake systems following guidelines from IDOT inspection reports as directed.
• Maintain and service shop equipment ensuring operational readiness.
• Organize supplies and parts systematically within the shop.
• Keep the bus garage clean and orderly as time allows.
• Secure the garage and its equipment at all times.
• Maintain precise service records for school buses to comply with state and federal transportation reporting requirements.
• Submit detailed records of vehicle services and expenses to the Transportation Director timely.
• Prepare and provide documentation necessary for billing, and fulfill state and federal transportation reporting duties.
• Safely transport vehicles for state inspections and warranty work as scheduled or directed.
• Respond promptly to phone and radio communications directed to the garage.
• Deliver and pick up materials and supplies both within and beyond district boundaries upon request.
• Undertake additional tasks assigned by the Transportation Director as required.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid Illinois bus driver's license or be able to obtain one.
• Possess strong mechanical skills and experience in vehicle maintenance and repair.
• Maintain a satisfactory driving record verified through National Driver Register and Secretary of State's Driver Services.
• Demonstrate a clean criminal record and satisfactory work history.
• Capable of performing basic physical and visual tasks needed for the role.
• Ability to drive a school bus when necessary.

Salary and benefits are determined according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
