Role Summary
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with managing vehicle flow around construction and road maintenance zones to ensure safety for workers and the public. This role involves setting up and dismantling traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades, using hand signals and paddles to communicate with motorists and direct them safely through or around work areas. Working outdoors in varying weather and standing for long hours are essential aspects of this position.
Primary Duties
- Deploy traffic control equipment including signs, cones, and barricades to redirect vehicles at work zones.
- Control traffic using stop/slow paddles to maintain safety and efficiency.
- Communicate effectively with crew members through two-way radios.
- Stand, walk, and use hands extensively for up to 10 hours daily.
- Handle lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to transport equipment to sites.
- Conduct regular vehicle inspections to ensure safety and functionality.
- Work in environments exposed to outdoor weather, moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Adapt to moderate to loud noise levels.
- Follow company policies and perform additional assigned duties as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Pass background checks including motor vehicle records review.
- Meet federal Department of Transportation drug and safety testing standards.
- Use appropriate safety gear such as safety-toed boots, hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests.
- Proficient with two-way radio communication.
- Willingness to work in diverse weather and traffic conditions.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills with contractors and internal teams, delivering excellent customer service.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
- Maintain excellent attendance and possess reliable transportation and a strong work ethic.
- Successfully complete ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver instruction.
- Flexibility to travel statewide with occasional overnight stays and availability for night and weekend shifts as project demands.
- Availability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
