About the Role

We invite an enthusiastic individual to join our expanding team at Dark Sky Project as a full-time Tour Guide, based in Takapō / Mackenzie District, New Zealand. This permanent position involves minimum 32 hours weekly commitment and combines conducting immersive night sky tours with guest driving responsibilities. Located on the scenic Takapō lakefront, the Astronomy Centre offers unique interactive experiences showcasing star science and Tātai Aroraki (Māori astronomy), appealing to both domestic and global audiences.

Key Responsibilities and Skills

The successful candidate will warmly welcome visitors, facilitate memorable illumination sessions of the night sky, and act as a cultural ambassador connecting guests to Ngāi Tahu heritage. Drivers must undertake routine vehicle inspections, maintain accurate driving logs, and uphold rigorous health and safety standards. Flexibility is essential given shift work across nights, weekends, and public holidays.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum three years of astronomy-related guiding, science communication, visitor interpretation, or tour guiding experience, or alternatively a Level 4 New Zealand Certificate or Diploma (or equivalent international qualification) in the relevant fields.
  • Demonstrated public speaking and customer-facing experience.
  • Tourism industry experience is preferable.
  • Valid New Zealand Driver’s Licence, P endorsement, Class 2 Driver’s Licence, and First Aid Certificate (or the ability to acquire these).
  • Strong health and safety commitment, time management, and attention to detail during vehicle checks.
  • Willingness to learn and accurately pronounce reo Māori terminology.
  • Capability to work varied shifts including nights and public holidays.
  • Additional language skills such as Japanese or Mandarin are advantageous for catering to international guests.
