Job description
Role Overview
The Technical Officer (TO) plays a critical role in ensuring smooth operation and upkeep of laboratories, workshops, and related facilities within the School of Engineering. The position involves managing assets, overseeing inventory, coordinating procurement activities, and maintaining equipment to provide a secure and fully functional learning environment compliant with institutional and audit standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and maintain engineering laboratories and workshops, including management of tools, equipment, and training systems.
- Conduct regular maintenance, servicing, and repairs of lab and workshop apparatus, ensuring orderly and safe facilities.
- Manage assets and inventory through tagging, stock monitoring, and scheduled inventory audits.
- Coordinate procurement processes by sourcing vendors, obtaining quotations, and acquiring necessary equipment, consumables, and training materials.
- Prepare and maintain training resources and ensure laboratory and workshop readiness for practical sessions and assessments.
- Monitor and ensure adherence to safety regulations, institutional protocols, and equipment handling procedures.
- Keep thorough records relating to equipment maintenance, inventory, procurement, and safety compliance.
- Support audit readiness for internal and external evaluations including ISO audits by maintaining proper documentation and facility standards.
- Maintain and manage college-wide laboratory and workshop infrastructure.
- Perform additional operational or administrative tasks as required.
Qualifications and Candidate Profile
- Relevant qualifications in Engineering or closely related technical fields.
- Practical experience in a laboratory, workshop, or technical support setting.
- Familiarity with asset management, inventory control, and procurement methods.
- Understanding of safety protocols and maintenance practices relevant to laboratory and workshop environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for documentation and reporting purposes.
- Strong organizational capabilities with keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Effective communication and coordination skills.
- Enthusiasm for continuous learning and adaptability to new operational systems or processes.
