Job description
Role Overview
We are looking for a highly skilled Software Engineering Manager (Technical Lead) to join our engineering team based in Auckland. This hybrid role involves dedicating half of your time to hands-on technical development and the other half to leading your squad. Unlike a purely managerial position, you will continue to actively program, review code, and define architectural standards, setting a high technical benchmark for the team.
IDEXX has made strong strategic investments in Veterinary Software, aiming to create the first fully integrated vertical SaaS platform for Animal Health. The Auckland office serves as IDEXX's global Software Centre of Excellence, where cloud-native platforms and applications are designed, built, and operated to support veterinary professionals around the world.
Responsibilities
- Advocate and implement agentic coding and AI-supported development processes to reshape the software development lifecycle from design to operation.
- Lead actively by coding features, ensuring comprehensive automated test coverage, and maintaining high-quality software delivery.
- Design and document technical architectures for complex large-scale, secure, scalable, and maintainable systems.
- Conduct senior-level code reviews to elevate code quality and maintain robustness in production releases.
- Promote engineering excellence and participate in technology discussions to drive platform advancement.
- Mentor and develop a diverse, cross-functional engineering squad with coaching and hands-on guidance.
- Create an inclusive and psychologically safe team culture that encourages open collaboration and optimal performance.
- Set clear performance goals and development plans for squad members, tracking progress and supporting continuous growth.
- Assist in recruiting and retaining top-tier engineers aligned with IDEXX's values and technical needs.
- Encourage a culture of ownership and accountability, ensuring the squad understands and values their deliverables.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering leadership, Product Managers, and Architects to align squad objectives with the product roadmap and technical strategy.
- Streamline squad processes to enhance delivery efficiency, reduce work in progress, and maintain transparency with stakeholders.
- Drive engineering process improvements and contribute to the evolution of IDEXX’s engineering principles and practices across teams.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- More than 7 years of experience as a Software Engineer with proven success in hands-on technical delivery in modern environments.
- Demonstrable ability to lead and mentor engineers while actively contributing technically.
- Experience fostering engineering culture improvements including greater engagement, agility, automated testing, and advanced DevSecOps.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, and contemporary software design methodologies.
- Proficiency with modern web and backend technologies such as React, Go, TypeScript, .NET, Ruby, or Java, with capability to review code and direct architectural decisions.
- Familiarity with Agile delivery frameworks like Scrum, Kanban, or hybrids.
- Experience working in large-scale SaaS environments is strongly preferred.
What IDEXX Offers
- Comprehensive onboarding, induction, continuous training, and transparent, performance-oriented professional development.
- Competitive salary packages with attractive incentive schemes.
- Access to continuous learning opportunities, both from internal resources and external programs.
- Flexible hybrid working environment supported by an excellent office space featuring amenities such as a gym and rooftop bar.
- Additional perks including coffee, fresh fruit, weekly Food Truck Fridays, and a dog-friendly workplace.
- Fully covered Southern Cross Health insurance and subsidized parking via Parkable.
