About Johnson Controls

Johnson Controls specializes in smart building solutions, delivering comprehensive hardware and software systems that enhance building safety, comfort, and efficiency. The company supports a large technical communication team, employing over 80 writers who engage in advanced technical content creation and management, including proprietary DocOps processes.

This includes authoring tools, publishing platforms, content management systems (CCMS), style guides, review and editing workflows, illustration, and patent development. Most documentation employs DITA XML along with other authoring tools such as InDesign, Framemaker, and Madcap Flare.

Role Overview

The role involves close collaboration with manufacturing teams based in Dublin, requiring up to four days onsite weekly. Responsibilities include producing content for business units supporting product releases under senior team guidance, creating technical illustrations, and contributing DocOps support within process teams.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in technical writing
  • Academic background in English, Journalism, Technical Communications, Languages, Software & Hardware Engineering, Multimedia, or Science
  • Experience with topic-based writing, especially using DITA XML
  • Technical illustration skills using Photoshop, Illustrator, or equivalent software
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with development and product management teams
  • Capability to plan, organize, and manage multiple program release schedules
  • Mentoring experience and willingness to share knowledge within the team culture
  • Competence in document control and versioning with content management or version control systems
  • Technical proficiency with scripting languages, APIs, and SQL is preferred
