Job description
Overview
The Department of Conservation (DOC) seeks a Team Lead Internal Applications to oversee and enhance the platforms underpinning DOC's operations, transforming complexity into effective solutions and increasing efficiency with ServiceNow and associated enterprise platforms.
This permanent full-time position is Wellington-based with openness to Auckland candidates and offers a salary range between $110,033 and $145,000, depending on skills and experience.
Role Purpose
In this role, you will lead developers and system administrators maintaining internal systems that support DOC's daily functions. Your remit includes collaborating closely with business leaders, architects, vendors, delivery teams, and partners to ensure internal applications remain reliable, secure, user-centered, and future-ready. You will spearhead ServiceNow capabilities and influence platform strategy while building internal expertise to optimize off-the-shelf solutions rather than creating redundant systems.
Key Responsibilities

- Shape platform strategy and roadmaps focusing on prioritizing improvements, integrations, upgrades, and service enhancements that add business value.
- Develop and manage a skilled, collaborative team of developers and system admins, encouraging growth and technical excellence.
- Guarantee security, reliability, governance, and compliance with DOC architecture, information management, and security policies.
- Collaborate effectively with stakeholders, vendors, and Māori partners to deliver evolving solutions that elevate the employee experience.
Required Skills and Experience
- Proven leadership experience managing teams in application development, platform engineering, or systems administration.
- Advanced expertise in ServiceNow administration, configuration, development, or equivalent enterprise SaaS platforms.
- Strategic thinker capable of balancing business objectives, sustainability, risk, and financial prudence.
- Experience utilizing DevOps, change management, release management, and integration methodologies to deliver modern application services.
- Strong interpersonal skills capable of building trust and influencing across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Commitment to mentoring and growing team capabilities while fostering an inclusive, high-performance culture.
- Sound knowledge of information security, IT architecture, governance, and best practices for enterprise applications.
- Understanding and appreciation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles with a dedication to partnering effectively with Māori and embracing diverse perspectives.
Benefits
