Taxonomist

Role Overview

We are seeking a meticulous and data-oriented Taxonomist to design and manage the product classification system that supports our eCommerce platform. This key position influences product discoverability, recommendations, and customer experience by maintaining a robust taxonomy framework.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and manage a multi-level taxonomy including category trees and sub-categories aligned with business and customer demands.
• Implement and uphold taxonomy standards such as naming conventions and classification rules for all product lines.
• Regularly update and audit categories to ensure accuracy, remove obsolete classifications, and resolve misplacement issues.
• Develop detailed product attribute schemas ensuring consistency and completeness for facets, filters, and metadata fields.
• Collaborate with content teams to standardize data entry and attribute validation.
• Support AI initiatives by preparing datasets, defining evaluation metrics, and refining auto-classification and tagging processes.
• Participate with various teams including Search, Merchandising, UX/UI, and merchant onboarding to maintain taxonomy alignment with business goals and front-end usability.
• Manage taxonomy tools, produce reports on classification accuracy and health indicators, and develop comprehensive taxonomy documentation and training materials.

Candidate Profile

• 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in taxonomy design, information architecture, or catalog management, ideally within eCommerce or retail sectors.
• Demonstrated expertise in structuring extensive product catalogs with over 200,000 SKUs.
• Strong knowledge of product attribute modeling, metadata standards like GS1 or UNSPSC, and faceted search implementations.
• Experience using Product Information Management (PIM) or Content Management Systems (CMS).
• Proficient with data tools such as Excel, Google Sheets, SQL for querying, and Python scripting.
• Excellent analytical skills for identifying and resolving data inconsistencies within large datasets.
• Fluency in English and Arabic with the capability to clearly document complex classification logic.
• Autonomous and proactive approach to identifying and executing improvements.
