Job description

Overview

The Systems Administrator role is responsible for ensuring the seamless operation of multi-user computing environments by collaborating closely with network teams. This position involves the creation and enforcement of policies governing resource allocation, ongoing maintenance of IT hardware and software, and management of system configurations. Additionally, the administrator will handle user accounts, optimize system performance, manage updates, and document configurations. The role includes recommending and overseeing hardware/software procurement, installations, and data backup strategies, as well as evaluating vendor solutions and interacting with end users.

Primary Duties

  • Engage daily with end-users through briefings to report on system statuses.
  • Deliver on-site system administration support and assist engineers with system management.
  • Execute routine, emergency, testing, and exercise system administration tasks, adhering to technical guidelines and checklists.
  • Manage user and group accounts, including creation, modification, and deletion along with policies and profiles.
  • Provide hands-on training and one-to-one support for system usage.
  • Continuously monitor mission-critical systems for performance and connectivity to preempt service interruptions.
  • Collect application, system, and security logs related to any service interruptions; support issue resolution and forensic analysis.
  • Identify and correct system errors and faults.
  • Conduct system backups and archives as per operational procedures.
  • Restore and recover systems based on technical manuals and instructions.
  • Manage system startups, reboots, and shutdowns appropriately.
  • Log maintenance activities—both planned and unplanned—using official tracking tools.
  • Support maintenance activities remotely, including scheduled and corrective measures.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve emergent system issues promptly.
  • Offer technical guidance and training to end-user engineers for problem identification, system analysis, coding, and validation.
  • Assist in documentation and oversight of system problem reports.
  • Extend operations, maintenance, and support activities to operational and laboratory environments.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Information Security, Computer Science, Computer Systems Engineering, Management Information Systems, or related discipline.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within team settings.
  • Strong time management with the ability to prioritize tasks to meet program demands.
  • Proficient problem-solving and issue resolution skills.
  • Familiarity with a variety of software packages is advantageous.

Experience and Technical Expertise

  • Experienced in Red Hat Linux system administration.
  • Proficient in Windows system administration.
  • Hands-on with virtualization technologies.
  • Knowledgeable in VMware ESXi and vSphere environments.
  • Experience with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) implementations.
  • Understanding of storage solutions such as NAS, SAN, or equivalents.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and Windows security permissions.
  • Familiarity with Red Hat Linux and Unix operating systems.
  • Understanding of network interfaces, addressing schemes, and naming services.
  • Awareness of computing and network security management protocols.
  • Experience with Red Hat Identity Management (IdM).
  • Exposure to VMware Horizon and VMware vSAN technologies.
  • Proficiency with Windows Server 2012 and 2016, plus Windows 10 and 7.
  • Experience managing application servers such as JBoss and Tomcat.
