Overview
Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland's Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences encompasses six schools with more than 4,000 students, led by distinguished researchers, educators, and health professionals. The faculty is dedicated to advancing health and well-being across generations in Aotearoa, underpinned by a commitment to Māori health and innovation.
Te Kupenga Hauora Māori (TKHM), situated on the Grafton Campus, coordinates Māori health teaching within the faculty. TKHM also leads the Vision 20:20 initiative, focused on strengthening the Indigenous health workforce, and houses the Tōmaiora Research Unit, specializing in Kaupapa Māori health research and education.
The school operates from a purpose-built facility fostering collaboration and interaction. Partnerships with Te Whatu Ora | Health NZ, Te Aka Whai Ora | Māori Health Authority, communities, organizations, industries, and international bodies support the mission to promote the health and mana of the people of Aotearoa sustainably.
Role Purpose
The Student Support Advisor position contributes to the Vision 20:20 goals by increasing the number of Māori and Pacific health professionals through the Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MAPAS). The advisor provides cultural and educational support to Māori and Pacific students across foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate academic and pastoral support services for Māori and Pacific students at various study levels.
- Manage administrative tasks involving admissions and student support programs.
- Develop innovative and practical approaches to improve student experiences requiring critical thinking.
Team Environment
The team is supportive and values collaboration and continuous feedback to ensure high-quality student services.
Candidate Profile
- Strong, in-depth knowledge of Māori and Pacific cultures to provide relevant guidance and mentorship.
- Well-established networks within Māori and/or Pacific communities.
- Awareness of challenges facing Māori and Pacific students in higher education.
- Possess an undergraduate degree from a relevant field.
- Effective independent worker and team collaborator.
- High proficiency in administration and communication.
- Proven relationship-building skills.
- Capability to organise and manage events.
- Collaboration skills with academic staff.
- Excellent time management and organisational abilities.
- Willingness to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.
Additional Details
This is a fixed-term appointment for 18 months at a full-time workload. The salary range is NZD 63,600 to 79,300 pro rata, based on skills and experience.
