Job description
Overview
Join Ashby as a versatile product engineer embracing full ownership over product projects from conception through execution, working in a fast-paced, almost no-meeting environment. Ashby operates like a unique hybrid of early seed and growth-stage startup, delivering software that serves over 100,000 weekly active users including customers like Shopify and Notion.
Role and Responsibilities
As a Staff Software Engineer focused on product engineering, you will lead end-to-end project delivery involving research, product specification writing, wireframing, designing, and implementation. You will collaborate across teams while wielding significant influence on product decisions and technical choices.
- Design and implement reusable technical solutions across the full stack.
- Build features such as automated interview scheduling and generalized filtering architectures.
- Engage directly with customers to gather requirements and refine features.
- Take on traditional product and design responsibilities to guide feature delivery fully.
- Maintain fast, high-quality shipping standards to support rapid growth and excellent user experience.
Company Culture and Work Environment
Ashby fosters an engineering culture that values autonomy, ownership, minimal procedural overhead, and relentless innovation. Engineers have freedom to own projects end-to-end, with product managers providing problem briefs and customer insights. Communication is deliberate yet minimal, preserving significant focus time. The team prioritizes diversity, collaboration, and continuous learning.
Candidate Expectations
- Comfortable contributing across the entire tech stack as needed.
- Adept at balancing technical and product ambiguity, creating flexible, scalable system abstractions.
- Proven ability to deliver high quality software over time without sacrificing speed.
- Strong ambition to learn and grow continuously, open to frequent feedback.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work seamlessly with cross-functional stakeholders.
- A mindset focused on creating leverage through automation and abstraction.
Ideal Traits and What to Avoid
- Not primarily focused on project management or architecture reviews; preference for hands-on engineering work.
- Discomfort with minimal process or lack of formal sprint planning.
- Preference for clean, upfront planning over iterative and ambiguous projects.
- Lack of ownership experience or desire to mentor junior engineers in a high-tenure team.
Additional Information
Ashby supports remote work with minimal meetings, focusing on extensive focused work time. The team meets in person twice yearly, with budgets to encourage local meetups. The engineering team values outstanding developer tooling and automation, enabling multiple daily deployments and high developer productivity.
