Job description
Company and Role Overview
Ashby is seeking a versatile and driven Staff Software Engineer to join its Product Engineering team. This role offers engineers the unique opportunity to own large portions of product features end-to-end, acting as product managers and designers in addition to developers. Ashby is a fast-growing company serving renowned clients including Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake with over 100,000 weekly active users. The company values creativity, ownership, and innovation in a startup environment that blends early-stage agility with growth-stage market success.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of significant product areas by researching customer needs, crafting product specifications, designing wireframes, and implementing solutions across the technology stack.
- Develop flexible, reusable engineering components such as automated interview scheduling, declarative filtering architecture, and seamless offer signing features.
- Collaborate actively with stakeholders to ensure transparent communication and collective success in delivering high-impact features.
Work Environment and Culture
Ashby fosters a culture where engineers are empowered with agency and responsibility to innovate, free from excessive process and micromanagement. The team emphasizes minimal meetings, deliberate communication, and prioritizes developer experience with top-grade CI/CD, debugging tools, and developer tooling investments.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Comfortable working across the full technology stack and resolving both technical and product ambiguities creatively.
- Skilled in balancing quality with development speed in a high-velocity startup environment.
- Ambitious and open to continuous personal and professional growth through feedback.
- Excellent collaborator with strong communication skills, able to coordinate effectively with various internal partners.
- Driven to create leverage by building abstractions and tools that reduce repetitive work.
What Might Not Suit You
- Preference for strictly defined project management roles or heavy reliance on sprint planning and processes.
- Desire to focus only on technical details without engaging in product or customer contexts.
- Lack of experience owning projects or difficulty adapting to a high level of autonomy.
- Seeking substantial mentorship opportunities as a senior engineer, given a highly experienced team.
Engineering Culture Highlights
- Minimal processes that encourage engineers to own entire projects end-to-end.
- Natural collaboration combined with deliberate communication to maximize productivity with few meetings.
- Investment in tooling for faster development, including rapid CI/CD deployments.
- Commitment to building a diverse and inclusive team environment.
Additional Information
Ashby supports remote work, offers an almost no-meeting culture, and includes annual in-person meetups to build team cohesion. The engineering team predominantly consists of senior-level engineers ensuring high-quality standards and impactful product delivery.
