Job description

Overview

Ashby seeks a versatile and dedicated Product Software Engineer to join their growing Engineering team. This role involves end-to-end feature delivery across the stack with a strong emphasis on ownership, innovation, and reusable architecture. The candidate will work in a hybrid environment combining early-stage startup agility with the scalability challenges of growth-stage companies.

About Ashby

Ashby powers talent acquisition for top clients such as Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. The product supports over 100,000 active weekly users with outstanding retention and accelerated yearly growth above 100%. Its suite targets recruiting and HR challenges through tailored, intelligent solutions.

Role Responsibilities & Work Style

  • Lead major product areas independently, from ideation to delivery incorporating design and product management roles.
  • Create specifications, wireframes, and prototypes informed by customer feedback and market research.
  • Develop complex system features like automated interview scheduling and flexible filter architectures using SQL backends.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams maintaining minimal meetings and significant focus time.
  • Contribute to a culture promoting ownership, low process overhead, and high-quality, rapid software development.

Candidate Profile

  • Comfortable working across all layers of technology stacks adapting tools and infrastructure pragmatically.
  • Capable of managing projects with ambiguity, blending technical skill with customer-focused product thinking.
  • Balances speed with product quality, driving thoughtful engineering over rapid, shallow outputs.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator who seeks regular, deliberate interaction rather than solitary work.
  • Motivated to increase automation, build abstractions, and improve developer tools to maximize leverage.

Culture & Expectations

  • Minimal procedural overhead to empower engineers with high ownership and autonomy over product work.
  • Natural collaboration and thoughtful communication are core, leading to fewer than two hours of meetings weekly.
  • Engineering teams emphasize continuous learning, humility, and respectfulness.
  • Bi-annual company gatherings and support for local meetups nurture team cohesion despite remote arrangements.
  • Fast software delivery with frequent deployments and quality tooling underpin healthy development velocity.

Additional Information

  • Engineering leaders focus primarily on hands-on building rather than managerial or architecture-only roles.
  • This role does not rely on traditional sprint-based development or extensive project management frameworks.
  • Applicants with previous ownership experience preferred; mentoring responsibilities are limited due to team tenures.
  • Software quality and innovation are valued over process conformity and exhaustive upfront planning.
