Job description

About Airwallex

Airwallex is an AI-native financial operating system tailored for the real-time, intelligent economy. Serving over 675,000 businesses worldwide, including renowned brands such as McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, our platform empowers clients to manage financial operations and create innovative financial products. Established in Melbourne in 2015, Airwallex provides the critical infrastructure that powers global commerce, operating under over 85 licenses across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. Headquartered in both San Francisco and Singapore, our team exceeds 2,300 employees spread across 27 global offices. We seek individuals with entrepreneurial spirit, rapid decision-making abilities, curiosity, and who operate with fundamental principles rather than directives.

Role Impact and Responsibilities

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in architecting and developing robust, scalable, and secure systems for Airwallex's lending platform. Your work will facilitate seamless, compliant credit experiences tailored for enterprise clients and their users by delivering reliable APIs and services that enable embedding and consumption of credit products within clients' own environments. Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading design reviews and guiding systems architecture to ensure high code quality and technical standards.
  • Promoting resilient distributed system designs, automated testing frameworks, observability, and engineering practices that enhance platform reliability, scalability, security, and efficiency in delivery.
  • Developing and maintaining secure, well-documented APIs that integrate credit products into client offerings.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to create effective lending solutions and support the platform's expansion into new financing products.
  • Working onsite in the Singapore office five days a week.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of seven years of practical software engineering experience, incorporating modern development methodologies, continuous integration, and ensuring quality engineering standards.
  • At least two years in a leadership capacity leading technical teams and engineering strategy implementation.
  • Strong fundamentals in computer science and object-oriented programming, with proven backend system development experience—primarily using Java or Kotlin with Spring/Spring Boot frameworks, but openness to other programming languages.
  • Extensive expertise in designing and implementing RESTful APIs aligned with current API design best practices.
  • Experience with domain-driven design and event-driven architecture within production environments.
  • Proven background in creating and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency, and highly available distributed systems at scale.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS), including services like EC2, RDS, ELB, CloudFront, plus containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools including Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct technical initiatives, make informed architectural decisions, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.

Preferred Expertise

  • Experience working within financial services sectors, specifically lending, payments, or credit products.
  • Familiarity with developing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platforms.
  • Knowledge of designing systems for embedded finance solutions or enterprise client services.

Work Culture and Expectations

  • Ability to independently guide and own the product roadmap.
  • Proactive problem-solver who addresses issues without requiring explicit approvals.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and readiness to tackle challenges with minimal guidance.
  • Clear and culturally sensitive communication skills across diverse teams and geographies.
  • Humility, focusing on achieving the right outcomes over personal recognition.
