Role Summary

As a Staff Software Engineer at Malt, you will be instrumental in defining and driving the company's technological direction, system architecture, and engineering execution. You will contribute individually by developing innovative products that transform freelancing, while also providing leadership on design and architectural decisions impacting the entire organization. Your involvement in the lead engineering group will shape and elevate the company-wide standards for software and systems engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead large-scale, complex, and often high-stakes engineering projects spanning multiple teams or systems.
  • Design and implement scalable, efficient, and robust software systems and applications.
  • Define both immediate and long-term technology strategies and roadmaps for critical domains or infrastructure.
  • Enhance engineering quality by promoting best practices, coding standards, comprehensive code reviews, and operational excellence.
  • Mentor engineers, especially senior and mid-level developers, fostering technical growth and professional advancement.
  • Coordinate efforts and communication across squads, departments, and stakeholders, ensuring alignment in technical initiatives.
  • Promote an engineering culture focused on ownership, excellence, and speed.

Candidate Profile

  • Over 10 years of software development experience, preferably with time spent in product companies such as SaaS, fintech, or marketplace platforms.
  • Expertise in Java or Kotlin with comfort operating within intricate backend architectures, API design, and complex data models.
  • Strong interest and involvement in AI-related initiatives, staying current with emergent trends and applying AI concepts either in productivity tools or products.
  • Proven leadership ability to manage the balance between evolving technical goals and business priorities in dynamic environments.
  • Excellent technical craftsmanship and mentoring skills, capable of guiding both traditional developers and machine learning engineers.
  • A comprehensive product mindset: curiosity about feature purpose, proactive in suggesting improvements, and taking full ownership of delivery.
  • Highly resourceful, effectively overcoming staffing or logistic challenges to achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrates strong ownership and problem-solving capabilities, driving impactful solutions with autonomy.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; knowledge of French is considered an additional asset.

Selection Process

  • Initial discussion with a Talent Acquisition Business Partner to explore your background and aspirations (approx. 45 minutes).
  • Interview with the VP of Engineering to discuss your experience and role specifics (approx. 60 minutes).
  • Technical evaluation involving a case study and panel discussion with staff engineers to assess technical and architectural knowledge (around 2 hours).
  • Final conversation with the CTO to review the company's long-term vision, held at the Paris office.

Additional Information & Benefits

  • Structured onboarding week at the Paris office introducing company culture, products, and services alongside new hires.
  • Equity participation through stock options offered to all employees.
  • Legal benefits including daily €9 lunch vouchers, 50% reimbursement for any transportation costs, and healthcare insurance.
  • Between 8 and 12 RTT days annually.
  • Company-supported sports memberships via Gymlib (Wellpass).
  • Fully paid sabbatical leave for one month granted every three years of service.
  • Access to free books related to Malt's business to encourage continuous learning without approval hurdles.
  • Flexible hybrid work policy balancing on-site and remote working environments.
  • Annual team-building events to foster community and collaboration.

Malt is dedicated to maintaining an inclusive and diverse work environment. Hiring decisions are based purely on skills, experience, and potential, without discrimination by age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or disability.
