Job description

About Rippling

Rippling is a unified workforce platform that integrates all HR and IT operations—such as payroll, benefits, device management, and application provisioning—into a single streamlined system. By consolidating employee data into a single source of truth, automation replaces manual processes for tasks like onboarding, enabling setup of payroll, health benefits, hardware, and third-party apps such as Slack and Zoom within 90 seconds.

Headquartered in San Francisco, CA, Rippling has secured $1.35 billion in funding from leading investors including Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital. The company is recognized as one of America's top startup employers by Forbes, ranking 12th out of 500.

About the Team

The Tax Payment team facilitates the remittance of over $30 billion annually to more than 5,000 tax authorities across 40+ countries. Our mission-critical system manages the complete tax payment lifecycle—from salary payout through agency remittance and refunds—with a focus on accuracy and timeliness. The backend automates complex tax scenarios across various currencies and compliance environments, maximizing float income while adhering to strict audit and regulatory standards.

We engineer robust fault-tolerant pipelines that scale globally to handle large-scale automation challenges at the intersection of financial systems and international compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead architecture and development of the core tax remittance platform, ensuring reliability and correctness while processing $30B+ annually across multiple countries and agencies.
  • Design, build, and own end-to-end tax payment pipelines that manage the full lifecycle, ensuring on-time, accurate, auditable, and compliant tax payments and refunds.
  • Develop scalable distributed systems to support high-throughput, multi-currency transactions, with efficient handling of agency cut-offs, retries, reconciliations, and failure recoveries on a global scale.
  • Drive technical standards for reliability, security, observability, and audit readiness within a domain where software impacts livelihoods.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Payroll, Banking, Finance Operations, Compliance teams, and external partners to define product roadmaps, mitigate risks, and expand into new markets and products.
  • Mentor engineers across teams to promote technical excellence, architectural soundness, and a culture of ownership and high performance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 9 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 3 years leading architecture and designing consumer-facing systems.
  • Demonstrated strength in backend development, distributed system design, and managing sizable data pipelines.
  • Practical expertise with data processing technologies and frameworks for building scalable data workflows.
  • Extensive experience scaling real-time, high throughput software systems with a focus on performance.
  • Background in crafting consumer-grade applications with attention to user-friendly interfaces and experiences.
  • Solid analytical aptitude with exceptional debugging and problem-solving capabilities addressing complex technical issues.
  • Effective communication skills to explain technical details clearly to both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
