Staff Research Software Engineer - AI and Generative Models

Position Overview

Google Research has launched its newest facility in Singapore and is searching for a Staff Research Software Engineer to advance AI frontiers. This role involves groundbreaking work on improving the performance and efficiency of next-generation artificial intelligence models, specifically focusing on ultra-efficient generative AI systems such as Large Language Models, Diffusion Models, and Generative Videos. The successful candidate will lead a small agile team, contributing at the forefront of AI research to push computational efficiency for large-scale model serving and deployment.

Key Responsibilities

• Innovate and develop new algorithms optimizing the inference process for Large Language Models to achieve maximum throughput and minimal latency for global users. This includes refining sampling methods, speculative decoding, model compression, knowledge distillation, and quantization techniques.
• Create and optimize low-level software components responsible for efficient AI model execution. Focus on implementing custom kernels to enhance latency, throughput, and memory efficiency across diverse hardware platforms and model types.
• Collaborate closely with hardware architects to craft algorithms that leverage the strengths of specialized hardware and accelerators. Use comprehensive knowledge of both AI model architectures and compute hardware to guide algorithm design and selection.
• Enhance the research community's understanding and impact through scholarly publications and active dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Candidate Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in a relevant field.
• At least eight years of professional experience in software development.
• Minimum five years of expertise in testing and launching software products, including three years in software design and architectural roles.
• Five years or more experience working in areas such as speech/audio technologies, reinforcement learning, ML infrastructure, or other specialized machine learning fields.
• Extensive experience in machine learning system design and infrastructure, including model deployment, evaluation, data processing, debugging, and fine tuning.
• Proven ability integrating generative AI tools or large language model interfaces into practical workflows.

Preferred Expertise

• A PhD in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a related discipline.
• Prior work experience in academic or industrial research labs with a focus on AI innovation.
• In-depth understanding of transformer model architectures.
• Strong knowledge of ML systems, distributed computation, compilers, or performance engineering, including experience with high-performance computing and AI inference optimization.
• A track record of published work in leading AI research forums.
