Role Overview
We are seeking a Spot Trader to join the Mercury Wholesale Markets team, based in Auckland or Hamilton offices. This key position involves managing Mercury's electricity portfolio within the New Zealand Electricity Market (NZEM) to minimize risk and optimize value from generation assets. The market operates around the clock, so candidates should be prepared to work a roster covering day and night shifts. This entry-level role offers comprehensive training, excellent career progression towards derivatives and portfolio management, and multiple benefits.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the offering and real-time scheduling of Mercury’s generation assets, specifically geothermal plants, in NZEM.
- Apply defined trading strategies to maximize trading value.
- Engage in research and project work supporting long-term business goals.
- Develop prototypes and new processes to improve performance and efficiency.
- Contribute to innovation and sharing ideas to foster personal and company growth.
- Provide analytical advice and management reporting in areas including transmission risk, portfolio and fuel optimization, and forecasting energy margins and sales/generation volumes.
Candidate Profile
- Holds a university or equivalent degree in Commerce, Operations Research, Engineering, or a similar analytical or numerically focused discipline.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with proficient Excel skills.
- Advanced capabilities in detailed analysis and reporting.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Previous experience in the energy sector is advantageous.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
