The Software Engineer Manager role at Google extends beyond coding — it includes leading technical projects and managing engineering teams. You will enhance both your own work and help others optimize theirs, contributing strategically to projects and product development. These teams operate across a wide range of domains such as AI, natural language processing, distributed systems, networking, security, and UI design, serving global users at scale.
Responsibilities
- Define and communicate team priorities aligned with corporate objectives, coordinating strategy and decision-making among teams.
- Establish clear individual expectations relative to role and experience, conducting regular one-on-one meetings to review performance, guide development, and offer feedback.
- Create mid-term technical roadmaps to address future requirements and evolving infrastructure within your team's scope.
- Oversee system design processes and contribute hands-on to product or system development coding solving complex, ambiguous problems.
- Review peer code to ensure adherence to best practices, including style, accuracy, testability, and efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- At least 8 years of experience in software development.
- Minimum 3 years of full stack development experience including backend languages such as Java, Python, Golang, or C++, and frontend technologies like JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
- At least 3 years in technical leadership roles.
- Minimum 2 years of experience managing teams or people leadership.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
- 3 years experience working within complex, matrixed organizations.
