About the Role
The Physical Network Inventory team is responsible for maintaining Geographic Information Systems (GIS) inventory systems crucial for planning and constructing the Openreach network. These systems have played a key role in the UK's full fibre rollout. This position involves ensuring these vital systems remain operational, reliable, and future-ready.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain backend applications with a focus on strong database engineering skills.
- Design and implement scalable Java backend services using Spring Boot or similar frameworks.
- Build and optimize APIs and data-intensive services with an emphasis on performance and security.
- Collaborate with frontend and cross-functional teams to effectively integrate backend systems.
- Write clean, modular, and maintainable code adhering to best practices for error handling, logging, and system observability.
- Design, optimize, and manage robust database schemas in PostgreSQL, including advanced SQL and PL/pgSQL development.
- Perform performance tuning, query optimization, and maintain database efficiency including indexing, partitioning, and data modeling.
- Manage database reliability by monitoring, troubleshooting, and implementing backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Configure high availability, replication (streaming and logical), and failover mechanisms.
- Design and enforce database security policies such as Row-Level Security (RLS), role-based access control (RBAC), data masking, encryption, and auditing.
- Integrate database changes into CI/CD pipelines and collaborate with DevOps teams for automated deployment and monitoring using containerized environments like Docker and Kubernetes.
Required Skills and Experience
- Proficient in backend development with Java and Spring Boot or equivalent frameworks.
- Extensive experience with PostgreSQL 12 or higher, including advanced SQL, PL/pgSQL, and postGIS.
- Strong capabilities in database performance tuning and troubleshooting.
- In-depth knowledge of RLS, RBAC, and database security best practices.
- Experience setting up and managing high availability, replication, and failover strategies.
- Familiarity with DevOps workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and Linux-based environments.
Desirable Skills
- Experience working with cloud database services such as AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or GCP Cloud SQL.
- Knowledge of CI/CD tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and Azure DevOps.
- Familiarity with container orchestration and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Understanding of Infrastructure-as-Code practices is an advantage.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in any stream.
