Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Software Engineer to become a key member of our Canberra engineering team in a part-time, onsite capacity. This hands-on role demands proficiency across backend APIs, cloud infrastructure, and web applications, with a particular focus on serverless backend systems and integrations. You will work collaboratively with teams in engineering, product, and compliance to translate complex regulatory requirements into dependable production software. The role involves both architectural decision-making and implementation responsibilities, including building, testing, deployment, and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse and interpret business and system requirements to design scalable, secure, and reliable software solutions.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance APIs, backend services, and application components aligned with technical standards and specifications.
• Design and uphold RESTful APIs, JSON schemas, and OpenAPI specifications to ensure effective communication between internal and external systems.
• Participate in architectural and implementation decisions, evaluating technologies and identifying limitations to recommend solutions.
• Produce and review high-quality code consistent with software engineering best practices.
• Identify and remedy limitations, risks, and deficiencies within applications and development workflows.
• Build and maintain serverless and event-driven applications using AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, Cognito, and Secrets Manager.
• Design and enforce secure, multi-tenant application services including authentication and authorization controls.
• Create development and deployment tools, ensuring robust software management, monitoring, and security.
• Identify and mitigate risks impacting performance, availability, and security throughout the product lifecycle.
• Develop and maintain customer-facing and administrative front-end interfaces using Angular, integrating these with backend APIs.
• Design and implement integrations with external platforms and government services using protocols like REST, XML/SOAP, and AS4.
• Establish automated testing strategies including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; troubleshoot and resolve application issues.
• Manage software deployment automation including CI/CD pipelines and monitor operational metrics to enhance system performance and reliability.
• Conduct root-cause analysis for production incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Apply security best practices such as access control, encryption, and secure data handling; assist in identifying vulnerabilities and threats.
• Collaborate across teams to interpret regulatory requirements into precise and testable software behaviors.
• Document technical designs, operational procedures, and end-user guides; provide ongoing technical support through the software lifecycle.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.
• Minimum of five years professional experience in software development.
• Strong background in Node.js and TypeScript development.
• Proficient in designing and maintaining APIs and distributed backend architectures.
• Hands-on expertise in AWS serverless solutions design and implementation.
• Solid understanding of data modeling, asynchronous processes, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience with secure authentication, authorization, and multi-tenant application design.
• Strong software engineering practices including test automation, version control, code reviews, and maintainable design.
• Adept at troubleshooting complex production and integration issues.
• Capability to manage technical requirements throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Effective communication skills both written and verbal, including documentation and collaborative consultation.
• Familiarity with Angular front-end development to contribute to UI applications.

Desirable Skills (Not Mandatory)

• Experience with Angular Material, DynamoDB, AWS SAM or CloudFormation.
• Knowledge of AWS Cognito, OAuth 2.0, JWTs, and API security practices.
• Familiarity with testing tools such as Jest, Playwright, LocalStack, and contract testing.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and software supply chain security.
• Experience with high-volume, high-availability API platforms.
• Integrations involving XML, SOAP, WS-*, or AS4.
• Background in payroll, tax, fintech, HR, workforce management, or compliance technology.
• Exposure to ISO 27001-aligned or security-regulated software environments.
