Job description
Role Overview and Responsibilities
Become a vital part of Xero's Database Reliability Team as a Software Engineer focusing on database stability and efficiency. Your workday will be evenly divided between software development and enhancing database reliability. You'll develop internal tools aimed at optimizing fleet management and simplifying the administration of Xero’s database platform.
By monitoring performance metrics, increasing system observability, and proactively resolving production concerns, you will maintain the platform's health, resilience, and efficiency. Your contributions will underpin a robust infrastructure, supporting engineering efforts company-wide and delivering an outstanding user experience to millions of users worldwide.
Team Dynamics and Initiatives
Join a vibrant and cooperative team responsible for maintaining the database technology powering Xero’s primary products. The team emphasizes shared knowledge, collaborative problem solving, and seamless scalability to meet growing demands. Their focus includes continuous platform reliability improvements and the adoption of advanced methods such as AI-driven workflows.
Current team projects include:
- Migrating the database platform from self-managed SQL Server instances to Amazon RDS and transitioning toward PostgreSQL.
- Enhancing internal tools to improve fleet administration, automate workflows, and raise developer productivity.
- Advancing platform observability and performance through bottleneck identification, load balancing support, and resilience enhancements.
- Incorporating AI tools into everyday operations to boost engineering excellence and output.
Working Arrangements

Candidate Profile
- Proficiency in .NET, C#, and AWS technologies, or strong experience in backend engineering with a flexible, language-neutral approach.
- Hands-on experience with database platforms like SQL Server, Amazon RDS, or PostgreSQL, coupled with an eagerness to develop platform engineering capabilities.
- Demonstrated skills in creating scalable backend tools, clean coding practices, and automating routine tasks.
- Knowledge of system observability, database performance tuning, and mitigating production issues under operational conditions.
- Ability to architect resilient software solutions while utilizing contemporary development resources, including AI-enhanced workflows.
- A collaborative spirit, enthusiasm for continual professional growth, knowledge sharing, and mentoring colleagues.
