Job description
Role Overview and Impact
This position is for an experienced search engineer eager to operate at a substantial scale. As a Senior Engineer on Xero's Search team, you will support one of the largest search clusters in the Southern Hemisphere. Your work includes managing hundreds of millions of searchable documents globally with a target uptime of 99.9%, alongside contributing to a major platform redevelopment that will drive Xero's future expansion.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and enhance large-scale search clusters to ensure high availability and performance.
- Contribute across search-specific systems and broader engineering tasks, including code reviews and project leadership.
- Work collaboratively across teams including ingestion, product management, and platform coordination groups.
- Participate in a multi-year search platform rebuild using a globally scaled search cluster.
- Support the ingestion pipeline in partnership with the ODL team for the new platform.
- Engage in future development initiatives involving data and AI-related search capabilities.
Team Environment
The Search team is small and closely connected, located across Melbourne, New South Wales, and New Zealand. It emphasizes quality and teamwork in solving complex technical problems.
Work Location and Flexibility
This role can be based in Australia or New Zealand with flexibility in your daily work location. The team reconvenes in Melbourne about twice a year for alignment and in-person collaboration. Xero also offers "boost days" to work onsite and engage with the wider company community.
Desired Profile
- Proven expertise in building, scaling, and maintaining search systems in production environments.
- Strong foundation in software development principles with ability to handle both specialized search and general coding tasks.
- A commitment to high-quality code and standards in both writing and reviewing.
- Effective collaboration skills across distributed teams including engineers, product managers, and infrastructure personnel.
- Experience or familiarity with data or AI tools is advantageous but not essential.
