Job description

About the Role

MongoDB is expanding its Sydney team to develop advanced tools that assist customers in comprehending and upgrading their application codebases. The Application Modernisation Platform (AMP) directs users through the modernization process, transitioning from legacy relational databases to scalable systems based on MongoDB. The App Analysis & Modelling team is responsible for the crucial initial phase: constructing the context that fuels all subsequent processes. This involves developing code analysis tools that build dependency graphs and produce deep insights into codebases, enabling customers to fully understand their current applications prior to transformation. Additionally, the team creates schema recommendation engines that evaluate signals such as relational schemas and query patterns to guide data modeling choices. Their work combines analysis, data modeling, and AI to empower developers to make data-driven decisions as they migrate to MongoDB.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain scalable backend systems and applications for code analysis and schema recommendations.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers and cross-functional engineering teams to design and implement innovative features guiding the modernization journey.
  • Contribute high-quality, thoroughly tested code to both backend and frontend services.
  • Design and build performant APIs and data pipelines that support code analysis and recommendation functionalities.
  • Engage in code reviews, providing and receiving feedback to uphold high standards of software quality.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues across the entire stack.
  • Participate in engineering processes including continuous integration, deployment, quality assurance, and testing.

Candidate Profile

  • At least 3 years of professional software development experience with solid proficiency in Python and/or Java.
  • Experience designing and implementing scalable APIs and efficient backend services.
  • Strong understanding of relational data modeling, SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or equivalent), schema design, and query optimization.
  • Good grasp of algorithms, data structures, and their computational complexity.
  • Experience with frontend technologies like React and TypeScript or eagerness to work across the full stack.
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, a positive mindset, and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing AI-powered features, including working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and workflows involving autonomous agents.
  • Background in code or static analysis tooling, or creating tools that parse and interpret code programmatically.
  • Familiarity with MongoDB technologies.
  • Experience with cloud-native distributed systems such as Kubernetes.
  • Contributions to open-source projects.

Performance Expectations

  • Within 3 months: Acclimate with MongoDB database and aggregation language, understand backend technologies (Python, Java, API infrastructure), set up development environment, start contributing to product codebase, and engage with peers on code reviews and design discussions.
  • Within 6 months: Gain proficiency with full stack including React/TypeScript frontend, deliver significant product features, contribute to multiple releases, and participate in technical design and scoping.
  • Within 12 months: Become a key team contributor capable of independently managing complex features, deliver large features spanning the entire stack, assist in hiring processes, and collaborate with other MongoDB teams on cross-functional projects.
