Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Product Manager to lead scalability efforts for the Atlas data platform at MongoDB, based in Dublin. Atlas powers some of the world’s most demanding applications with unpredictable workloads ranging from real-time gaming and financial transactions to AI. Scalability is critical to maintaining customer trust by ensuring seamless performance despite traffic spikes, slowdowns, or growth.

This position is responsible for the comprehensive product experience related to scaling Atlas deployments both vertically and horizontally. This includes vertical scaling through instance tier changes, autoscaling mechanisms, horizontal scaling involving sharding strategies, and managing operational workflows accompanying these processes. You will develop strategic direction, collaborate closely with engineering teams to execute the roadmap, and be accountable for continuous improvement in reliability and predictability of scaling year after year.

The emphasis is on ability to quickly grasp complex technical domains and confidently advocate product decisions among engineers, field partners, and CTOs, even when challenged. Fundamental database scaling knowledge can be acquired on the job, but sound judgment and decisiveness are critical from the start.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a focused and assertive vision and strategy for Atlas cluster scalability and translate it into prioritized initiatives for each product release.
  • Own the full roadmap concerning vertical scaling, autoscaling, horizontal scaling, and related operational and observability features that customers rely on during scaling events.
  • Make difficult prioritization decisions, including declining requests with significant support, and stand by these decisions and their outcomes.
  • Build a deep technical comprehension of Atlas scaling components such as instance tier functionality, autoscaler algorithms, sharding mechanics, balancer behavior, and capacity management to influence engineering tradeoffs and requirement settings effectively.
  • Represent the product vision assertively to senior engineering personnel, field teams, and enterprise customers, even amidst disagreement.
  • Maintain close engagement with customers and field partners to identify scaling pain points, failure scenarios, and critical trust-building moments.
  • Establish success metrics for scalability, develop early-warning analytics tools, and use data-driven insights to make informed decisions under uncertainty.
  • Lead proactive collaboration across Engineering, Design, Documentation, Support, Marketing, and Sales to deliver robust and widely adopted scaling experiences.
  • Mentor junior product managers and contribute to higher-level strategic product thinking and leadership decisions, operating without direct reports.
  • Be responsible for driving measurable year-over-year growth in scalability performance metrics.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience managing complex, technically challenging infrastructure-level products. Experience with databases, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Proven ability to own enterprise-level technical products end-to-end, achieving quantifiable business and customer success outcomes.
  • Technical fluency to discuss architecture, failure modes, and performance trade-offs confidently with senior engineers and relate these technical factors to customer impact.
  • Experience taking products from inception to scale, with tangible results in both creating new offerings and expanding existing ones.
  • Strong orientation towards customers and field operations, with regular direct engagements resulting in actionable product requirements and roadmap prioritization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of delivering clear, compelling messages tailored for diverse audiences including executives, engineers, customers, and field teams.
  • Advanced analytical capability to define and instrument success metrics, debug analytics, and utilize data to support decision-making without replacing sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated decisiveness and conviction when making difficult choices in ambiguous environments, with examples of scope management and resilience under challenge.
  • Interest and willingness to engage with Go-to-Market, Marketing, and Sales enablement functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with database technologies, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure components including compute, storage, and capacity planning.
  • Prior product ownership of developer tools, infrastructure platforms, or critical SaaS products geared towards enterprise clients.
  • Experience dealing with autoscaling, capacity planning, sharding, or similar elasticity challenges in any technical domain.
