Position Overview
The role primarily involves assisting in general shop duties including grinding, sweeping, and polishing as directed. This position supports welders and mechanics by performing manual labor tasks and receiving on-the-job training to develop specialized fabrication skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out helper duties throughout the shop area according to instructions.
- Perform cleaning tasks such as sweeping and maintaining shop interiors and exteriors.
- Support welders and mechanics by completing finishing tasks including grinding and polishing.
- Engage in training to acquire more advanced fabrication skills.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic familiarity with fabrication equipment and processes.
- Competent in reading tape measures accurately.
- Eager to develop skills in grinding, drilling, welding, torch operation, blueprint reading, and machinery operation.
- Basic mathematical skills including counting and measurement calculations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and carry weights up to 60 lbs, with mechanical or team assistance when needed.
- Physical activities include sitting, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, twisting, pulling, pushing, gripping, and climbing.
- Exposure to loud noises, welding fumes and gases, and variable weather; appropriate protective gear is provided.
