Shift Leader

Role Purpose

The Shift Leader is responsible for meeting the production targets for clinker on their shift, ensuring safety, product quality, operational efficiency, and managing costs effectively. This role supports the plant's annual goals by overseeing all shift operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and optimize every stage of the production line, from quarry through to packing.
• Lead safety enforcement by practicing Visible Felt Leadership and ensuring the team follows safety protocols.
• Manage emergency response coordination and implement the Emergency Response and evacuation plans effectively.
• Collaborate with service departments to maintain plant equipment in optimal condition.
• Oversee equipment handover after maintenance, ensuring post-maintenance tasks are completed.
• Direct daily plant operations during shifts, establish priorities, and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Coordinate the night shift maintenance team and manage additional support requests as per procedures.
• Analyze operational outcomes and implement corrective measures as needed.
• Assist in planning and organizing plant stoppages, including short and long-term shutdowns.
• Supervise major maintenance activities like kiln re-bricking during shutdowns.
• Evaluate contractor performance on-site.
• Ensure production adheres to environmental standards and maintains excellent housekeeping standards.
• Monitor plant process lines using available technology to guarantee safety, equipment stability, and compliance with environmental regulations.
• Oversee troubleshooting, inspections, and maintenance to prevent failures and ensure production continuity.
• Manage turnaround maintenance, root cause analysis, reliability improvement initiatives, and other company best practices.
• Provide training, guidance, and performance appraisals to subordinates; recommend promotions, transfers, or disciplinary actions as necessary.
• Oversee shift team efficiency and effectiveness.
• Review shift logs detailing equipment status, breakdowns, and repairs.
• Regularly check output quality and take corrective action when required.
• Authorize material withdrawals, overtime, work orders, and permits.
• Ensure proper use and return of equipment, tools, and materials.
• Log abnormal operations and rectify or report issues promptly.
• Request maintenance support for equipment faults following established procedures.
• Initiate emergency stop procedures and request maintenance assistance during emergencies.
• Adhere to Environmental and Quality Management System requirements, including EMS and ISO 9001:2000 standards.
• Ensure accurate documentation of daily production and logs.
• Participate in the implementation and upkeep of the plant's Integrated Management System.

Candidate Requirements

• Strong understanding of cement manufacturing processes.
• Good grasp of product quality standards and quality control testing methods.
• Familiarity with computer-aided systems for kiln and mill control.
• Proactive problem-solving skills and the ability to take initiative.
• Bachelor’s degree in any Engineering field is required.
• Experience of 3 to 5 years as a Shift Manager or Production Coordinator in a cement manufacturing environment.
