About the Role and Company
Nestlé, a global leader in the food and beverage sector with a heritage of over 150 years, is seeking a dedicated Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Specialist for its Harrismith Factory in Free State, South Africa. The individual in this role will play a critical part in ensuring the safe and environmentally responsible functioning of the site, implementing and upholding Nestlé’s SHE management systems aligned with company policies, international standards, and legal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the implementation and continuous upkeep of SHE Management Systems according to international safety and environmental benchmarks, including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, and report on their performance across the site.
- Ensure comprehensive compliance with applicable SHE legislation, conduct identification and evaluation of SHE-related risks and environmental impacts, and assist with contingency planning to mitigate potential hazards.
- Promote and advance safety culture by applying behavioral safety programs, facilitating the establishment of SHE committees, and supporting emergency response teams such as Fire, First Aid, Hazmat, Evacuation, and Crisis management groups.
- Lead SHE incident investigations to determine root causes, ensure implementation of corrective measures, and manage the submission and analysis of monthly SHE key performance indicators, with follow-up action plans for any deviations.
- Offer expert SHE consultation site-wide, coordinate with occupational health personnel, identify and address training requirements through a structured training matrix, and supervise contractor adherence to Nestlé’s SHE standards during projects and on-site operations.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Possess a BTech or Advanced Diploma in Safety, Environmental Management or Engineering.
- Certification in SAMTRAC (Safety and Management Training Course) or equivalent Integrated SHE Systems training.
- At least three years’ experience in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in risk management, accident and illness prevention, and conducting SHE incident investigations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence individuals beyond direct reporting lines, coupled with proactive initiative for long-term improvements.
- Effective communication and problem-solving capabilities.
