Senior Utilities Engineer – System Owner

About the Role

This key position is part of the Site Facilities & Engineering (F&E) team, with the successful candidate acting as the System Owner for specific Utilities Equipment Systems on site, reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Utilities Engineering. The role demands expertise across GMP and non-GMP systems, the application of statistical analysis, continuous improvement techniques, problem-solving, and engineering knowledge related to utility systems, equipment, and their automation and interfaces.

Scope of Utilities Systems

• Plant Utilities: Steam Boilers and Low Pressure Hot Water Systems
• Water Systems: Potable, Industrial, Cooling Tower, Chilled, Fire Water
• Fire Protection, Fire Detection, and Gas Detection Systems
• Electrical Systems: General Power, Emergency Power, UPS Power
• GMP Clean Utilities Water Systems: Purified Water, Water for Injection, Clean Steam
• GMP Gas Systems: Nitrogen, Compressed Air, Process Air
• Process Waste Systems

Key Responsibilities

• Take lead ownership and troubleshooting responsibility for assigned utility systems.
• Conduct root cause analyses, investigations, and manage deviations for operational issues in these systems.
• Collaborate with Manufacturing, QA, Labs, and EHS departments on performance, safety, and environmental matters concerning the systems.
• Serve as the Subject Matter Expert and site representative during external and regulatory audits.
• Design and deliver system-specific training as the designated SME.
• Plan maintenance shutdowns for the assigned systems.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system performance.
• Engage actively in work center teams as the SME for equipment and systems owned.
• Monitor and maximize system uptime and daily operational performance.
• Perform data trend analysis to proactively identify and manage performance issues.
• Troubleshoot emerging performance trends effectively.
• Conduct risk assessments and lead mitigation projects related to system performance.
• Ensure proper implementation of preventive maintenance schedules.
• Promote predictive maintenance practices and uphold maintenance governance standards.
• Maintain critical spare parts inventories at appropriate levels.
• Define and scope improvement projects for the systems.
• Manage interfaces of systems with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Process Control Systems (PCS).
• Lead design reviews connected with equipment purchases or system changes.
• Handle Quality System triage sessions, investigations, deviations, and CAPAs related to owned systems, including root cause analyses.
• Develop and execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and Installation and Operational Qualification (IOQ) protocols.
• Represent Facilities & Engineering in teams focused on new technologies, products, or business processes on site.
• Review and approve operating procedure changes and participate in change control processes for systems.
• Own and complete work orders within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) related to assigned systems.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical discipline).
• Prior experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors preferred, particularly roles involving equipment ownership, operation, troubleshooting of utility or process systems, and electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation expertise.
