Job description
About the Company and Role
A fast-expanding US-based Insurtech startup is pioneering a Managing General Agent (MGA) specializing exclusively in AI Liability insurance to cover enterprises deploying AI agents and autonomous AI systems. Having raised $12 million in recent funding, the company is preparing for market launch, including securing Lloyd's capacity and setting up its coverholder framework. The startup has developed proprietary AI risk-rating methodologies, actuarial models, a technology platform to assist underwriting, and collaborated with Stanford experts. It already maintains strong connections with brokers and AI agent platforms.
Position Overview
We are seeking to hire a Senior Underwriter as the first underwriting lead. This role provides a rare chance to establish and expand underwriting processes for a newly formed insurance product aimed at AI-related errors & omissions (E&O) and liability risks. The selected candidate will be entrusted with full accountability from inception for assessing, pricing, and binding intricate AI liability risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate, price, and bind complex and emerging technology-related risks focused on AI liability.
- Develop, refine, and implement underwriting appetites, policies, and methodologies specific to AI risk.
- Collaborate closely with brokers and clients to gain insight into novel AI exposures and respond accordingly.
- Create and modify policy wordings addressing new AI perils.
- Employ strong underwriting judgement despite limited historical loss data in this emerging field.
- Translate proprietary AI risk frameworks and technology into actionable underwriting decisions.
- Contribute to portfolio development and scaling of underwriting operations as the MGA expands.
- Forge robust relationships across broker, carrier, and capacity markets.
- Eventually lead and grow the underwriting team to support future business needs.
Candidate Profile
- 8 to 12+ years of experience underwriting Cyber, Technology E&O, Professional Liability, or related specialty insurance products.
- Demonstrated ability to independently structure, price, and underwrite innovative, complex, or emerging risk classes.
- Proven track record in product creation, underwriting framework development, or drafting policy wordings is highly desirable.
- Strong market presence with established broker and capacity provider relationships.
- Senior-level credibility to engage meaningfully with carriers, reinsurers, and capacity providers.
- An entrepreneurial spirit with eagerness to build a product from ground up instead of inheriting existing books.
- Direct experience with AI liability, affirmative AI coverage, or autonomous/agentic technology insurances is a plus but not mandatory.
Company Background and Proposition
- Founded by leaders with backgrounds in insurance, technology, and engineering, including ties to Stanford University and senior roles at Aon.
- Developed a proprietary AI risk-rating system alongside actuarial consultancy support.
- Created a technology platform specifically to facilitate underwriting processes.
- Focused on affirmative E&O and AI liability for enterprise AI deployments rather than merely adapting traditional cyber insurance.
Current Status and Future Plans
- Raised $12 million in funding as of April.
- Pre-launch phase moving towards imminent market entry.
- Securing Lloyd's capacity and establishing a coverholder structure.
- In ongoing talks with brokers and AI agent platforms.
- Seeking to onboard their inaugural senior underwriter to operationalize and scale underwriting activities.
Location
While the company is headquartered in San Francisco, they are open to appointing a senior underwriter based in London’s Lloyd's market. Candidates based in London who are willing to relocate to the US in the future will also be considered.
Why Join?
- Become a founding team member with significant influence on underwriting AI liability insurance products.
- Shape product development, risk appetite, portfolio strategy, broker relationships, and capacity partnerships.
- Opportunity to lead and grow an innovative underwriting function specializing in emerging technology risks.
