Job description

Job Overview

The Senior Technician will be responsible for performing maintenance tasks including repairing, calibrating, troubleshooting, re-commissioning, and efficiently maintaining instrumentation and control (I&C) equipment and systems. The goal is to ensure seamless operations and minimize production downtime for power generation units and auxiliary systems.

Primary Duties

  • Troubleshoot, calibrate, repair, and maintain diverse I&C equipment and systems within the power plant environment.
  • Execute preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance with minimal supervision, including shift and on-call duties as required, to restore systems swiftly to operational status.
  • Evaluate assigned tasks technically, understanding the appropriate methods, procedures, risks, and selecting proper tools and equipment to complete work safely and effectively.
  • Perform maintenance activities following strict Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards and plant operational protocols to reduce workplace incidents.
  • Utilize SAP software to requisition spare parts and accurately document all completed maintenance activities.
  • Identify recurring faults, recommend solutions, and implement corrective actions to prevent similar failures.
  • Provide hands-on training for new craftsmen and contract workers to develop their maintenance skills as per established plans.

Equipment Managed

At the Jebel Ali site: Power generating capacity of 2350 MW with 23 Gas Turbines, 23 Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), 7 Steam Turbines, a 30 MGPD Desalination Plant with blending and distribution systems, alongside auxiliary systems such as fuel storage and supply, compressed air systems, sea water intake and chlorination, all governed by eight different OEM control and Distributed Control Systems (DCS).

At the Taweelah site: 3000 MW capacity power plant featuring 9 Gas Turbines, 8 HRSGs, 9 Steam Turbines, RO water treatment plant, fuel gas compressors, air compressors, black start generators, liquid fuel storage and supply, and sea water intake and chlorination facilities controlled by GE Mark-VIe based DCS and various OEM PLC systems including GE-Fanuc.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Industrial Instrumentation and/or Electronic Engineering.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders must have minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role in a thermal power plant; diploma holders require at least 5 years.
  • Practical experience with gas turbines, steam turbines, waste heat boilers, and balance of plant (BOP) equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation, electronics, electro-pneumatics, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Key Skills

  • Operation and maintenance of GE gas turbines with Speedtronic control systems.
  • Experience with HRSG and steam turbines controlled via Speedtronic Mk VIe or equivalent control systems.
  • Distributed Control Systems such as GE and Allen-Bradley.
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) including GE-Fanuc and Allen Bradley.
  • Bentley Nevada Vibration Monitoring systems.
  • Industrial water treatment analyzers including pH, conductivity, silica, chlorine, and dissolved oxygen, managed with computerized systems.
  • Testing and calibration of power plant field instruments.
  • Proficient English communication skills, both written and verbal, combined with strong interpersonal presence and assertiveness.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams, including during shift work schedules.
  • Self-driven with dedication and a passion for thriving in a multicultural workplace.
