Role Overview
As the landscape of technology and customer demands evolve, Datacom is undergoing a substantial AI transformation that promises to revolutionize markets in New Zealand and Australia. We are seeking a Senior/Tech Lead AI Engineer passionate about pioneering AI advancements and contributing expert knowledge to our AI-driven software projects. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to create and deploy state-of-the-art AI models that solve complex business problems. Multiple positions are open and ready for immediate filling.
Your Responsibilities and Contributions
- Lead the development and delivery of AI solutions within our Digital Engineering AI team.
- Design, develop, and integrate innovative AI models and workflows into production environments.
- Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to understand their needs and translate requirements into effective AI implementations.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Robust software engineering experience with at least seven years in professional development, primarily in Python and/or TypeScript.
- Hands-on experience delivering generative AI applications on platforms such as Azure OpenAI, Microsoft Foundry, Amazon Bedrock, or similar.
- Solid practical knowledge of AI concepts including context management, model integration with data and tools, retrieval methods, embeddings, and structured output formulation.
- Proficient in troubleshooting and verifying AI services, managing API limitations, timeouts, and ensuring output reliability and workflow accuracy.
- Strong communication skills enabling clear explanation of technical details, assessment of trade-offs, and alignment with customer expectations.
Preferred Skills and Expertise
- Experience in professional services or client-focused roles.
- Familiarity with AI orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph, LlamaIndex, Microsoft Agent Framework, or equivalents.
- Knowledge of advanced retrieval algorithms like hybrid search, reranking, and graph-based retrieval, including understanding complexity trade-offs.
- Experience with AI-assisted development, workspace automation, controlled code execution, repair workflows, and outcome verification.
- Understanding of Model Context Protocol or similar for integrating tools and data securely, including authentication and permission control.
- Expertise in multimodal document and image processing using leading AI model providers and cross-modal embeddings.
- Experience in fine-tuning AI models or hosting custom models on platforms such as Microsoft Foundry or Amazon SageMaker when suitable.
