Senior Software Java Engineer - Customer Fulfilment

About the Role

We are developing the next-generation, flexible, scalable, and resilient Fulfilment platform at Tesco, designed to automate and optimize both manual and robotic order fulfilment across all customer order centres globally. This platform, named Fulfilment Point System (FPS), supports order processing for all product categories including Grocery, General Merchandise, and Fashion. FPS helps fulfilment centres worldwide by managing order picking, marshaling, and dispatch, alongside providing real-time workflow visualization and intervention capabilities.

Our globally distributed team utilizes a full stack Java technology approach with core components comprising microservices, backend APIs, rich user interfaces, eventing platforms, and data layers. Technologies in use include Java, RxJava, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Couchbase, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Splunk, AppDynamics, New Relic, and Azure Cloud.

We maintain responsibility throughout the software lifecycle using a DevOps culture with continuous integration and delivery, supporting code through to live production environments.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop high-performance, robust Java applications for next-generation customer fulfilment.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance system performance, scalability, and reliability for mission-critical applications.
• Create APIs and microservices integrating with enterprise systems and external platforms.
• Write maintainable, clean, well-documented code adhering to best practices and standards.
• Identify and resolve complex technical issues promptly to ensure smooth operations.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of continuous development improvement.
• Work jointly with hardware teams, data scientists, and operations for innovation and collaboration.

Required Experience and Skills

• Proven experience with agile product development methodologies.
• Hands-on expertise in building, maintaining, and supporting reliable, operationally strong full stack and distributed Java applications.
• Experience working in globally distributed software engineering teams is highly advantageous.
• Deep understanding of IDEs, Java language, and related toolsets.
• Ability to implement critical components in large or complex projects.
• Strong grasp of Java frameworks like Spring Boot and underlying abstractions.
• Proficiency in test-driven development and debugging sophisticated technical issues.
• Knowledge of design patterns including CQRS, idempotency, and performance-oriented design.
• Commitment to maintain and improve code quality (Boy Scout rule).
• Skill in building CI/CD automation pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience with Kafka, PostgreSQL, Couchbase databases, and cloud platforms, specifically Azure.
