Senior Software Engineer - REDAPL Graph Engine

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to advance REDAPL, Datadog's Referential Data Platform. REDAPL plays a crucial role in tracking infrastructure resources and their interrelations for Datadog customers, powering insights across performance, cost, and security domains. The platform supports multiple products such as Cloud Security Posture Management, Resource Catalog, Cloud Cost Management, and Service Catalog, processing over 4.5 million updates per second.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop a high-performance query engine capable of efficient relationship traversals tailored for demanding workloads.
• Lead and contribute to major projects aimed at enhancing platform scalability, resilience, and value, collaborating with multiple teams.
• Guide engineering teams in making architectural decisions about the platform.
• Detect system risks and reliability trends and devise appropriate design solutions.
• Participate in prioritizing engineering-driven initiatives within short and long-term planning cycles.
• Work closely with internal product teams to grasp their integration needs and support their product growth relying on REDAPL.

Candidate Profile

• Holds a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline, or possesses equivalent experience.
• Has extensive experience working with diverse types of data stores.
• Brings several years of platform or infrastructure-focused engineering experience.
• Has led significant technical initiatives prioritizing performance, cost efficiency, ease of use, and system resilience or operability.
• Possesses strong backend engineering skills and experience in building and operating high-scale distributed systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with graph databases such as Neo4j, Memgraph, JanusGraph, ArangoDB, Amazon Neptune, or PuppyGraph.
• Production experience with Apache Iceberg.
• Knowledge of query planning and ideally contributions to production-grade query engines or related projects like Trino, Calcite, Substrait, or DataFusion, potentially evidenced through open source contributions or project committee membership.
