Job description

About Scribd, Inc.

Scribd, Inc. aims to enhance human understanding through its four main products—Scribd®, Slideshare®, Everand™, and Fable—that provide billions worldwide with insights and expertise beyond mere access. The company culture fosters authenticity and boldness, promoting open discussions, committed teamwork, and empowering employees to act in the customer's interest. Scribd Flex offers employees a flexible work model balancing individual preferences and collaborative, intentional in-person interactions, which are occasionally required regardless of location.

Team Overview

The Discovery Applications team is a key part of Scribd's Machine Learning and Discovery Engineering Division, responsible for the web experiences behind advanced search, recommendations, and generative AI features. This full stack team owns the end-to-end discovery user experience across Scribd and Everand, transforming machine learning capabilities into engaging, user-centric features.

Role and Responsibilities

As a frontline contributor in a cross-functional team, you will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and product managers. Strong communication skills both synchronously and asynchronously are essential.

Your primary focus will be frontend development, but a comprehensive understanding of the full technology stack is critical to working alongside backend and machine learning engineers in delivering complete products. You will build impactful user experiences powered by Machine Learning and Generative AI.

Your duties encompass the entire software development lifecycle, including architectural design advisement, code review, interviewing candidates, and mentoring junior engineers. You will contribute not only by coding but also by shaping code strategy, system design, delivery, and operations while prioritizing testability, scalability, maintainability, and observability.

Key Attributes and Experience

  • Strong ownership of frontend systems from initial design through sustained evolution.
  • Systems thinking ability to design frontend architecture at scale.
  • A pragmatic approach balancing ideal modernization solutions with incremental improvements.
  • Excellent collaboration skills working effectively with product and platform teams.
  • Long-term focus on maintainability, extensibility, and developer experience.
  • At least 6 years of professional experience in frontend software engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and React.
  • Experience using Next.js or comparable modern web frameworks.
  • Understanding of microfrontend architectures, monorepos, or shared frontend platforms.
  • Expertise in web performance, bundling, and optimization techniques.
  • History of collaborating with backend and platform teams to establish clean integration methods.
  • Comfort working in high-traffic, high-impact production environments.
  • Experience working with shared codebases, including monorepos and shared UI libraries, facilitating cross-team collaboration.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills thriving in remote, documentation-oriented cultures.
  • A collaborative mindset partnering with product, design, and backend teams to deliver comprehensive features.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing or migrating large, complex, or legacy frontend codebases.
  • Contributions to modernizing frontend systems in production environments beyond greenfield projects.
  • Perspective on frontend architecture as a product for engineers rather than purely a delivery channel.
  • Consideration of performance, accessibility, SEO, quality, and observability as integral aspects of development.
  • Commitment to testing and quality standards facilitating safe and repeatable large-scale migrations.
  • Passion for simplifying technical complexity and improving systems.
  • Awareness of the impact of technical decisions on developers and end users alike.

Compensation and Location

Salary ranges are influenced by role, experience, skills, education, and geographic location. For Canadian candidates, the expected salary spans from CAD 157,000 to CAD 201,000. Additional benefits include competitive equity ownership and a comprehensive benefits package.

Employment Eligibility and Locations

Applicants must reside in or near specified metropolitan areas where Scribd can employ directly. In Canada, eligible locations include Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver. The position requires occasional in-person attendance despite its remote nature.

Benefits

  • Flexible work model (Scribd Flex).
  • Extensive health, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • Mental health and disability support.
  • Generous paid leave including vacation, holidays, sick days, volunteer and sabbaticals.
  • Paid parental and family support benefits.
  • Retirement matching and stock equity offerings.
  • Programs for professional development and learning opportunities.
  • Wellness and home office stipends.
  • Complimentary access to Scribd's product suite.
  • Access to leading enterprise AI tools.

Equal Opportunity and Accessibility

Scribd values diversity and equal employment opportunity regardless of personal attributes protected by law. The company encourages applicants of all backgrounds and adapts its interview process for accessibility needs upon request.
